My Wife Is Adorable - Chapter 2

[Hear that, supporting character? Once the leads meet, you’re out of the picture. One person stepping aside is better than three people suffering. Get divorced already.]
[Okay, but before she married him, she lived in the servants’ quarters and barely had enough to eat. He gave her a good life. Is she really going to give that up?]
I lowered my eyes to my smooth, neatly kept fingernails.
Qin Zhan really was good to me.
In his home, I didn’t have to get up at five to make a different breakfast for everyone. I didn’t have to clean the house before eating their leftovers.
I could read without hiding. Nobody laughed at me for wanting my steak well done.
I could grow flowers I liked.
I could even go out to work.
The day I officially became a special-education teacher, Qin Zhan met me after work with a bouquet. He booked out a restaurant to celebrate.
[Enough, female-lead fans. He treats her well, sure, but hasn’t she given something in return?]
[Given what? That ridiculous pork-bone soup she makes every day? Standing around doing nothing while he does rehab?]
[His leg hurts on rainy days and she just cries. Can’t even say anything comforting. Then she gets herbal heat packs from some Chinese medicine clinic. Please. He’s beastfolk. What good are human remedies going to do? He has to pretend they work, then comfort her and wipe her tears!]
[And when he tries walking without his cane, she stands at the finish line watching. He falls and she doesn’t even help him up, just sneaks one step closer. You call that contributing? Don’t make me laugh.]
Ashamed, I bowed my head.
I had always known that Qin Zhan’s leg healed because of his extraordinary willpower and the grueling training he did day after day.
He was strong. So strong he didn’t need me to do anything for him.
But he truly treated me well. Apart from Mom, he was the first person who ever had.
I couldn’t help wanting to do something for him.
[Don’t tell me she thinks he has real feelings for her. LOL. Your compatibility is only 30%. Pick two random people off the street and they’d score 25%. Wake up. He’s nice to you out of duty.]
[If you really want to repay him, ask for a divorce before the female lead gets back.]
At four in the morning, Qin Zhan’s military communicator chimed on the bedside table.
He immediately got up to wash and dress.
I rubbed my eyes, sat up, and slowly moved to the edge of the bed to wait.
Once he was in uniform, he came over. I took his tie and straightened up, and his hands settled automatically on either side of my waist.
Turning up his shirt collar, I looped the tie around his neck.
“Will you be back before dinner?”
“Probably.”
I quickly tied a four-in-hand knot and smoothed his collar. “Then I’ll bring you chestnut cake after work.”
“Mm.” He kissed my forehead. “Get some more sleep.”
After he left, I couldn’t sleep, but I didn’t want to get up and exercise either.
At the end of last month, he’d come home from a twenty-day mission just as his heat began.
By the end of that night, I’d passed out.
When I woke, he was sitting beside the bed, looking grim.
I supposed he thought I was too weak.
After that, I started getting up early to exercise with him. But after twenty-odd days, my body had begun to resist.
Like now. I wasn’t sleepy, yet I didn’t want to move.
I lay there for a while, then shifted sideways until my face rested against his pillow.
His scent filled my nose: soft, rich pine, quietly drawing me closer.
Slowly, I turned my face and buried it in the pillow.
The comments were right.
I had stolen someone else’s place.
I wasn’t worthy of Qin Zhan.
But it was also true… I couldn’t bear to leave.
