Chapter 5
I walked quickly toward the restroom.
Behind me, Mrs. Wang and Mrs. Zhao lowered their voices and gossiped:
“Oh, is Mrs. Huo having morning sickness?”
“But isn’t Huo Yanchuan infertile? How did she get pregnant?”
Huo Yanchuan’s eyes turned cold as he reprimanded them in a frosty voice, “What nonsense are you talking about? My wife just has an upset stomach.”
Mrs. Wang and Mrs. Zhao immediately apologized, “We were just joking, Mr. Huo, please don’t take it to heart.”
When I came out of the restroom, I saw Huo Yanchuan waiting for me in the hallway.
“Since you’re not feeling well, I’ll take you home first.”
“If you don’t want to attend these kinds of banquets in the future, you can refuse.”
I nodded and followed him home.
Huo Yanchuan called the family doctor to check on me.
I waved my hand, indicating that I was already fine.
I went to my room to rest and noticed that the pregnancy test stick on the bathroom counter was gone.
I hurried downstairs, wanting to ask Maid Wang if she had seen the pregnancy test stick.
As I passed the spiral staircase, I ran right into Huo Yanchuan.
In his hand was the pregnancy test stick.
In the room.
Huo Yanchuan looked grim as he asked me, “Xia Wu, are you pregnant?”
It seemed I couldn’t hide it anymore.
I nodded.
His expression grew darker and darker. “I’ve never touched you. Whose child is this?”
He hadn’t touched me, but I had touched him.
I stayed silent.
I didn’t know where to begin.
I couldn’t possibly confess to him that three months ago, I took advantage of him when he had a fever and was unconscious.
It wasn’t something to be proud of.
I couldn’t say it.
Besides, I hadn’t gotten his consent at the time.
Even though we are legally married, I still went against his wishes.
It was my fault.
It was a moment of foolishness, a moment of weakness.
I am guilty.
I made a gesture of apology to him.
His face darkened even more.
I wondered if he misunderstood and thought I was admitting to having another man outside.
After a long silence, he asked, “Do you plan to keep this child?”
I had already gone to the hospital for a checkup; I was pregnant with twins.
The doctor said the babies were healthy.
I nodded.
Yes, I planned to keep them.
Huo Yanchuan’s eyes reddened, as if he was suppressing a deep anger.
He thought for a moment, then said coldly, “I respect your choice.”
“But I’m not generous enough to raise another man’s children.”
“I’ll send you abroad for the pregnancy. After the babies are born, we’ll get a divorce.”
