Chapter 20
Julian Montgomery spoke as he turned on his phone.
On the screen was a photo of two boys.
There was a resemblance in their features: “My brother, Andrew Montgomery.”
The Montgomery Family’s parents had focused on grooming him as the successor for over twenty years.
With him at the helm.
Julian Montgomery’s growth and choices were actually more free-spirited.
Though he was also groomed, the expectations weren’t as strict.
He was essentially raised freely for over twenty years.
Suddenly, Andrew Montgomery unexpectedly passed away, and the parents needed him to take over.
So they forcefully tried to set him straight.
“Where were they earlier?”
“When I was a child, the three of them were always busy at the company, and I would wait at home for them to return.”
“Later, as I grew up, I stopped waiting. I don’t blame them, I’m just annoyed.”
“Annoyed at the feeling of tying emotions to fixed people and having expectations fall through.”
“And liking you means I have to tie expectations to a fixed person again.”
“It means I’ve truly been tamed by my parents, fulfilling their wishes.”
“To put it bluntly, I’m just scared of the word ‘settle down,’ afraid to admit it.”
He raised his hand and covered his face.
Julian Montgomery chuckled self-deprecatingly:
“The first time I was stubborn, you heard the truth and took the money, then turned around and went to hire a male host.”
“The second time I panicked, and you thought I wanted to keep you, so you simply left the capital with that male host.”
“The third time… I really didn’t dare anymore, so here I am.”
Julian Montgomery finished speaking, followed by a few uncontrollable coughs.
His lips were pale, and his deep eyes stared straight at me.
He smiled bitterly:
“You ran too fast.”
“I’m afraid if I’m stubborn again, I really won’t catch up.”
I pressed my lips together.
I couldn’t quite tell what kind of emotion was stirring in my heart.
After a moment of silence, I turned my head to look into the depths of Julian Montgomery’s eyes.
I spoke slowly, my voice very light:
“Don’t overthink it.”
“Look at it openly.”
“You’ve long since failed to catch up.”
“Whether you settle down or not, it doesn’t matter, it’s up to you.”
“Anyway, I don’t want it.”
