He’d always barely bothered with me. Now he got angry when I mistook someone else for him.

“You can’t see, but can’t you smell? He stinks. How could you think he was me?”

“Will you go with anyone who takes your hand?”

Even after returning to the Shen family, he sneaked back over the wall to see me.

As he rubbed medicine onto the places I’d bumped and bruised, he kept asking, “You didn’t talk to anyone else today, did you? Or hold anyone else’s hand?”

“Don’t worry. Going home doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten my promise to take care of you for the rest of your life.”

Utterly resigned, I began to question everything.
