Summary
Our village had a custom.
If a woman grew up and still couldn’t find a husband, she had to go to the ancestral hall and cast divination blocks before the god’s statue, asking whether she had been chosen to be his wife.
For hundreds of years, no one had received a yes.
I’d been single my entire life. Just to put my mind at ease, I cast the blocks three times and asked, “Am I your wife?”
They clattered to the ground.
Three yeses out of three!
Cold sweat broke out all over me. I deliberately challenged him. “What if I don’t want to be your wife?”
The blocks fell with a clack, one flat side up and the other curved side up.
He refused!
