Chapter 7
Chapter 7
I never expected Fu Jing to go back on his word.
Over the next few days, there were various banquets, large and small, that required me to accompany him. Now, things had taken a turn-the engagement hadn’t been called off, and everyone in the business circle knew I was his fiancée.
After one particular dinner party ended, I stared at Fu Jing with a look of deep-seated resentment.
The streetlights were sliced into segments by the car window, sliding silently across Fu Jing’s handsome face.
“What is it?” he asked.
“I think you’re swindling me.”
Fu Jing’s gaze fell on my lips, lingering there for a long moment. “Did I say how many events I needed you to attend?”
“No.”
“Were there no handsome men at the banquet?”
“There were.”
Fu Jing let out a soft chuckle. “Then how exactly am I swindling you?”
I became a regular fixture in his office. The snacks on the table piled higher and higher, and there was an unlimited supply of milk tea. Most of the time, I ended up in a sugar-induced coma on the sofa. Whenever I woke up, I’d be met with Fu Jing’s strangely paternal gaze.
Bai Qiaoqiao checked in on me every day like clockwork: “Did you have breakfast, Sister? It’s raining today; remember to keep warm.”
Occasionally, I’d even receive handmade gifts from her.
A few days later, I ran into Bai Qiaoqiao again at a script meeting. She had changed her perfume today, and the moment she entered, she rested her head on her hand and beamed at me.
“Sister, do you want to come to my room for a drink?”
“Uh, I have a cold lately. I’m on cephalosporins, so no alcohol for me.”
However, that night, while I was taking a stroll downstairs at the production’s hotel, I heard Bai Qiaoqiao’s voice coming from the nearby bushes.
“Being on set is so exhausting. Mr. Fu, I don’t want to do any kiss scenes.”
Under the dim lights, Fu Jing stood beside Bai Qiaoqiao as she acted spoiled toward him. In that moment, I heard the sound of a breaking heart. Actually, it broke twice.
Fu Jing frowned slightly. “I remember telling them about this a long time ago.”
“The director is new this time; it’s normal that he didn’t know.” She looked at Fu Jing pitifully. “Mr. Fu, please.”
“Fine. I’ll have them cut the scenes.”
A few minutes later, I received a call from the director: “The investor’s side says Bai Qiaoqiao can’t have any kiss scenes. You handle the rest of the arrangements as you see fit.”
In that instant, I felt like I’d been struck by lightning. The man and the woman I both had my eye on… were together?
That night, I got dead drunk in my best friend’s arms, utterly heartbroken. She pulled a long face and said, “Jiang Qian, can you please grow a brain? This isn’t the first time. If you only care about looks, you’re going to end up with no man and no money. Don’t you get it?”
“But she’s so good to me.”
“What do you mean, ‘good to you’?”
“She buys me breakfast, tells me to wear more clothes, and says goodnight to me.”
Just then, Bai Qiaoqiao sent me a text: “Sister, the moon is so beautiful tonight. Did you see it?”
My phone clattered to the floor. I sobbed, burying my face into my friend’s chest like a wounded puppy. “Such a tea bitch… what a pro…”
She reached her limit. “Get out!”
I don’t even know how I ended up being carried into Fu Jing’s Rolls-Royce. The scenery outside the window receded silently as I leaned against the glass, weeping in silence.
Fu Jing sighed. “What is it now?”
My tears fell in heavy droplets. I was miserable to the core. I scrambled onto his lap and faced him with eyes swollen like walnuts.
“Mr. Fu, can the three of us really not be together?”
The veins on Fu Jing’s temple throbbed. He placed his hands on my waist to make sure I wouldn’t fall before resigning himself to his fate. “Fine, tell me. Who have you set your sights on this time?”
I just kept crying without saying a word, looking the picture of devastation, my eyeliner completely smudged. Fu Jing patted my back and said, “Jiang Qian, I don’t allow a third person in my relationships.”
Those words were undoubtedly my death sentence. A nameless fire brewed in my heart. I suddenly pushed against Fu Jing’s chest, glaring at him like he was my mortal enemy.
“I hate you.”
Fu Jing’s expression froze. He narrowed his eyes. “Say that again?”
“I hate you.”
He let out a frustrated laugh. “Just because I won’t let you see other people? Are you even being rational?”
With a gentle shove, I collapsed into Fu Jing’s arms like a pile of mush. He stroked my hair and whispered, “Jiang Qian, as long as I’m alive, don’t even think about it.”
