Good Night, Mr. Ghost - Chapter 49
Inside the wardrobe was a face, pale and delicate, with jet-black hair meticulously styled atop her head. The head was screaming, “No, no! Get out!” Her face twisted in rage, her crimson lips contorting as she roared. Blood dripped continuously from her severed neck. Three iron nails pinned her hair and ears to the wooden board, securing her firmly. Clearly, she was the owner of the headless corpse outside.
Jiang Chenyi sniffed the air.
Mr. Ghost moved beside him, embraced him, and gently patted his back, saying, “Don’t be scared, are you frightened?”
Jiang rolled his eyes, “Isn’t that obvious?”
Who wouldn’t be scared by this?
The woman’s head continued to scream and howl. “I’ll kill you, kill you! I’ll make sure you never live again! Die, die, die!”
Meng Loudi frowned at the head and commanded, “Silence.”
The woman instantly stopped, trembling in fear.
Jiang clung to Mr. Ghost, feeling the cool fragrance emanating from him, and his mind settled.
Meng Loudi reassured him, “It’s alright, it’s alright. This woman has long been dead; it’s just a vengeful spirit causing trouble. Let’s check out other rooms.”
“Okay.” Jiang nodded, allowing Mr. Ghost to lead him out.
As they left, the young man glanced back through the narrowing gap of the closing door. He saw it-the woman’s head flashed a sinister smile. Black grew darker, red grew redder. What were those crimson lips saying?
Oh, was it this?
-You will die.
Jiang Chenyi watched the woman’s silent lips, feeling no fear at all. He looked at Mr. Ghost’s hand holding his, at that cold, pale hand, and smiled.
How could they possibly die?
Meng Loudi wouldn’t let them perish at the hands of some random spirit.
If he were to die, he’d rather it be at the hands of… his Mr. Ghost…
They were like players in an escape room, but with Meng Loudi’s overwhelming power, there was no fear, just exploration.
Mr. Ghost pushed open a nearby door, and they entered. The room was empty except for a giant mirror occupying one wall. The light flickered, and strange sounds began to fill the air. Drip, drip, drip. The temperature started to drop.
Meng Loudi looked at the mirror, smirking, “What’s up? Finally coming out?”
Jiang Chenyi glanced around, seeing nothing. Yet, in the mirror, there was clearly a person standing right beside him.
The man in the mirror wore a black suit, outdated in style, with hair parted in the middle, a sharp appearance. He stood just a step away from Jiang.
The man in the mirror looked at them, sighed with mild annoyance, “Oh dear, such a bother.”
He walked forward in the mirror, speaking as he moved, “The young master tried so hard to save you, yet you still spurn his goodwill, eager to become my meal?”
Meng Loudi laughed, “Haha, what did you say? Become your meal? Aren’t you afraid of breaking your teeth?”
The man covered his lower face, eyes filled with arrogance, looking at the ghost in the mirror. Arrogant and domineering.
Jiang Chenyi tightened his grip on Mr. Ghost’s hand.
Something felt different about Mr. Ghost now.
Meng Loudi pulled him into his embrace, whispering, “Don’t worry, you’ll definitely leave here safely.”
Jiang clutched the man’s clothes, thinking: What about you?
But now didn’t seem the right time to express concern.
The ghost in the mirror looked at them, saying, “Breaking teeth? I doubt it.”
That elegant, sharp face broke into a smile.
“Just because you’re a thousand-year-old ghost? Don’t underestimate us juniors-”
The ghost in the mirror reached the edge of the mirror, smiling eerily.
“Who is truly in the mirror realm?”
In an instant, the world seemed to darken, and time itself seemed to halt.
Jiang Chenyi stood at the door, sensing something amiss, quickly turning to look behind him.
But there was nothing, only the beginning of snowfall.
Tiny snowflakes fell, forming a thin blanket on the ground.
What was he supposed to do?
The young man stood at the door, his mind struggling to process.
The door creaked open.
A young woman stood at the entrance, wearing a white knee-length dress, “Mr. Jiang?”
“Oh, uh, sorry.” The young man looked at her, offering an apologetic smile.
“Oh dear, why apologize? You’ve come all this way, why not knock? Madam already mentioned it, sorry for keeping you waiting outside so long, please come in.” The woman stepped aside.
Jiang Chenyi remembered; he had come here for something important.
The young man shook off the snowflakes and entered.
The room was warm and cozy.
A door opened nearby, and a woman sauntered down, alluring and radiant, wearing a black cheongsam embroidered with white chrysanthemums.
The woman, soft and boneless, leaned against the wall, lazily watching Jiang Chenyi, smiling, “What’s wrong? Forgotten me after just two days?”
Who was she again?
Oh, Shen Baihe, the second young madam of the Cui Family.
Also… his benefactor.
Jiang Chenyi frowned unconsciously.
Not long ago, he met Shen Baihe, who offered to help him.
As a poor student, struggling with life, he had no choice but to accept her help, leading to this unspeakable relationship.
But something felt odd.
Shen Baihe approached him, her fingers tapping his lips, “Oh, forgot to tell you, my cousin is here too, but don’t worry, it’s fine.”
“What? Haven’t missed your sister these days?” The woman leaned in, her breath fragrant.
Yet, for some reason, Jiang Chenyi felt only disgust.
It seemed the beauty before him was something repulsive.
Shen Baihe seemed oblivious to the young man’s aversion, moving to one side, “It’s time for dinner, Xiang’er, where’s the young master? Call him down for dinner.”
Xiang’er, the woman who had opened the door for Jiang Chenyi, bowed, “Yes, second young madam.”
Then she hurried upstairs.
Shen Baihe headed to the dining room, complaining, “Honestly, such a big child, still causing trouble, my life is so hard.”
Jiang Chenyi followed her, murmuring, “What’s so hard about Madam Shen’s life?”
“Oh, why not call me Second Young Madam Cui?” Shen Baihe glanced back, her smile charming.
The young man paused, “You don’t like it, do you? Madam Shen sounds better.”
“Mm-hmm~ Sit down, Liu Aunt made chicken soup today, drink more, look at your thin face.”
The woman swayed her hips, sitting at the head of the table.
Jiang Chenyi obediently sat beside her.
The plump cook served the dishes, not forgetting to say, “Madam, that gentleman, recently…”
“Oh, don’t talk about bothersome things, let’s eat.” Shen Baihe interrupted, then softly added, “Remember, let Ling’er check again, if he has any improper thoughts, I’ll handle him.”
Hearing this, Jiang Chenyi’s heart skipped a beat.
Shen Baihe looked at her dazed lover, smiling, “What’s wrong? Chenyi, scared?”
Jiang Chenyi looked at her, saying nothing.
The woman gazed at her crimson fingertips, “It’s okay, after all, if anything bad gets out, Chenyi won’t be free of blame, right?”
Jiang Chenyi felt a massive shadow enveloping him, chilling him to the bone.
The woman leaned in, holding the young man’s face, her red lips close, whispering like a demon, “Chenyi won’t tell anyone, right? Just kidding, of course.”
She laughed, as if completing some prank.
A cold male voice entered from the doorway, “Sister-what are you doing?”
A man in a white robe stood there.
His long hair flowed, his entire being like a watercolor painting.
Black as black, white as white.
Ink-black hair, gentle brows, porcelain-white skin, lazily leaning against the door, watching them.
His gentle brows carried mockery, his black eyes filled with disdain as he looked at them.
Shen Baihe paused, sitting properly, “Chenyi, this is the good brother I mentioned, don’t mind him, he’s a rogue.”
The young man shrugged, walking over, “Who’s the rogue, sister. Hello, I’m Meng Loudi, Shen Baihe’s cousin.”
He extended a jade-white hand to Jiang Chenyi, his lips curving.
“Hello.”
“Hello.” Jiang Chenyi extended his hand, shaking the other’s.
For some reason, Mr. Meng Loudi’s gaze made him uneasy.
Or perhaps fearful?
Meng Loudi sat down.
After shaking hands, the young man tried to withdraw his hand, but the other held it firmly.
Meng Loudi met the young man’s surprised eyes, rubbing the skin in his grasp, “Such a fine appearance~ I quite like it.”
The man’s voice stretched, sticky and lingering.
It made the young man’s skin crawl.
“Madam, this is?” A man in a suit entered, holding a small child, about five or six years old, thin and small, wearing trendy suspenders and black shoes, head lowered, not looking at them.
Shen Baihe laughed, “Oh, this is my neighbor’s brother, visiting me for a few days, no problem, right? Yulou? Why not greet them?”
Her eyes fell on the boy, her tone laced with disdain and contempt.
“Oh dear, Yulou is such a troublesome child, everything needs teaching bit by bit.”
The boy called “Yulou” trembled, slowly raising his head to look at those seated at the table, timidly saying, “Hello, sirs.”
The young man smiled, “Hello to you too.”
Meng Loudi looked at the boy, scoffing, turning to watch the young man’s expression.
So gentle, so easy to bully.
Cui Yulou received the other’s friendly response, looked at the young man’s smiling face, then lowered his head again.
The man beside him spoke softly, “I’m Chen Zhiyan, the young master’s caretaker.”
