Chapter 6
A café near the airport.
The atmosphere was silent for a while.
In an attempt to break the ice, Ms. Zheng nudged the little boy forward: “Teddy, I’ve taught you Chinese, say hello to your brother.”
The little boy hesitated and refused to speak.
When pushed too hard, he burst into tears.
Ms. Zheng looked embarrassed, and her husband immediately stood up, speaking in broken Chinese: “I’ll take him for a walk elsewhere.”
The little boy was led away.
Ms. Zheng finally breathed a sigh of relief and turned to Jiang Ye, a hint of apology in her eyes.
“Ye, how are your courses going lately? Are you adjusting to the domestic teaching?”
Jiang Ye maintained the same expression throughout.
Not enthusiastic, but also not as resistant or angry as I had imagined.
“You’ve been asking about this for two years now, isn’t it a bit late?”
Ms. Zheng smiled helplessly: “Ye, can’t you just talk to me properly?”
Jiang Ye sneered: “Are you lacking people to talk to?”
The atmosphere grew increasingly tense.
I instinctively spoke up for Jiang Ye: “He caught up with the courses in high school, got into a good university, and is considering going abroad in the next two years.”
Ms. Zheng seized the opportunity as if rescued: “Going abroad is good too, I have some connections in Country A, and I can help Ye…”
“Not considering it, I won’t go abroad.”
Jiang Ye interrupted the conversation without hesitation, his gaze cold and resolute.
The next words made me feel even more uneasy.
“I won’t leave sis either.”
