From Breakup to Vows, Marrying My Ex to Prove a Point - Chapter 11
Regarding the acid attack, Mu Shi insisted on calling the police, despite Lu Yu’s parents’ desperate pleas.
They were a weak and helpless-looking couple. I couldn’t imagine how they had raised such an extreme and terrifying daughter.
At the police station, they knelt before us, begging us to sign a letter of forgiveness so Lu Yu wouldn’t be detained.
“She is an adult. She should be punished for her mistakes.”
Mu Shi shielded me behind him and said coldly, “Moreover, she harmed my wife. I will never forgive her.”
Lu Yu’s mother said in despair, “But it’s because she likes you.”
“It’s because she is sick. I was lenient with her before in the hopes that you would get her treatment promptly. But not only did you fail to do so, you enabled her to harm herself and others. Since that’s the case, let the law handle it. When she is released from detention, someone will arrange for her to receive treatment.”
With that, he didn’t spare another glance at the couple collapsed on the floor. He took my hand and walked out.
The night wind was sharp. Mu Shi carefully tucked my hand into his coat pocket, and we walked quickly to the car, where he turned on the heater.
As the car warmed up, I sniffled and leaned over to wrap my arms around his waist. “I suddenly feel like you’ve always treated me so well.”
“Hm?”
“The way you treated Lu Yu’s parents, compared to how you were when you were angry at me… they’re two completely different extremes.”
Mu Shi chuckled. “How could they be the same? They are strangers. You are the person I will spend the rest of my life with.”
I fell silent.
“What’s wrong?”
“That night… I saw the chat log between you and Auntie Mu. You said you weren’t thinking about marrying me for the time being.”
I bit my lip. Thinking of the heartbreak and sadness I felt that night still made my eyes well up. “So why did you change your mind later?”
Mu Shi’s hand on my back suddenly tightened. “Was it because you saw that message that you moved out?”
I buried my face in his chest and nodded, feeling utterly wronged. “They said you were just playing with me.”
“…It was because you broke up with me. I thought about it later, and I figured it was probably because I was really too busy and didn’t have enough time to spend with you. I was a little scared… scared that if we really got married, I wouldn’t be able to give you a good married life and would just end up holding you back.”
He sounded calm as he said this, but his voice held a faint undercurrent of dejection.
My heart ached with a tender, swelling feeling, and my fingertips felt weak. “You get scared and worried too?”
“What kind of question is that?” Mu Shi chuckled. “Of course. I’m a person, not a god. Besides, Nanjia, you have no idea how much I love you.”
The dim dome light shone down. He lowered his head to kiss me, and the already warm car grew hotter.
My hand was still injured, so I didn’t dare use much force. Mu Shi was very careful, supporting it.
My breathing grew ragged. I whispered, “When did you fall for me?”
“Hmm…”
Mu Shi murmured indistinctly, “Probably the day after you moved in, when you insisted on hanging that mermaid puzzle by the entryway cabinet.”
I pushed him away immediately, annoyed. “That late? I fell for you way earlier!”
“I’m kidding.” He leaned in again, his forehead resting against mine, breathing softly. “The day we first met, when I walked in and the table was covered in frogs you’d folded out of napkins. I fell in love with you at first sight.”
