Forgotten Love - Chapter 26
Lin Jiao accepted my invitation.
She had barely sat down when my words caught her completely off guard.
“Lin Jiao, my mother has told me everything about what happened back then.”
I looked at her with a complicated expression:
“I’m sorry, neither Huaian nor I knew that you…”
I deliberately paused for a moment.
Lin Jiao was clearly flustered.
She instinctively retorted:
“Impossible! Aunt Gu would never tell you…”
Her words came to an abrupt halt.
Lin Jiao realized that I was just fishing for information.
Her gaze gradually turned cold.
When she spoke again, her tone was unfriendly:
“Miss Shen, I don’t care what your purpose is in meeting me today. What happened back then is in the past, and I don’t want to bring it up again.”
“I know Gu Huaian has lost his memory and doesn’t remember marrying you.”
“If you’re worried that I’m back to compete with you for Gu Huaian, you can rest assured. I’ve never had any feelings for him. Back then, I was just using him.”
“That night at the party, you know as well as I do, I was drugged and not in my right mind. At a time like that, I would have thrown myself at any man.”
As she spoke, Lin Jiao curled her lips in a mocking smile.
As if my coming to see her today was completely unnecessary.
“Miss Lin, rest assured, I won’t.”
I smiled and shook my head, emphasizing again:
“I’m not worried at all.”
“Gu Huaian at thirty, I have no worries.”
“Gu Huaian at eighteen, I was a little unsure at first.”
“But…”
I paused, looking at Lin Jiao with a half-smile:
“The moment he pushed you away that night, I knew I didn’t have to worry anymore.”
Lin Jiao’s expression remained indifferent.
But the hand clutching her purse had turned white at the knuckles.
She lowered her head and took a couple of sips of coffee.
When she looked at me again, the unwillingness and sadness in her eyes had been concealed.
“Miss Shen, since there are no misunderstandings, I’ll be leaving now.”
Lin Jiao forced a stiff smile:
“I wish you and Gu Huaian happiness.”
Without waiting for my reply, she hurried away as if someone were chasing her.
Just now, I had deliberately said those provocative words.
And Lin Jiao’s reaction confirmed it for me once again.
All these years, she has never truly let go of Gu Huaian in her heart.
I thought of Lin Jiao’s parting words, that blessing whose sincerity I could not gauge.
Suddenly, my heart felt as if it had been pricked by needles, a dense, piercing pain.
Happiness and bliss, is it?
But my happiness is already counting down to its end…
