Chapter 26
“You’re back in the country?” I couldn’t help but ask him.
“Yeah, in a bit.”
His “in a bit” hurt my pride. I tossed my phone aside and swore I’d never reply to his messages again.
At 11 p.m., just as I was about to sleep, the phone rang.
It was Liam Evans.
I glanced at it, turned off the screen, and wasn’t planning to answer.
After a while, he called again.
I still didn’t pick up. I wanted him to understand the disdain of human nature.
After a while, the phone finally quieted down.
Ha, childish.
Just as I was feeling smug, there was a knock on the door–my dad.
“Ella Thompson, why did you call Li? He said you called him several times, and when he called back, you didn’t answer. It’s the middle of the night…” My dad, with dark circles under his eyes, yawned as he spoke, “Did your phone accidentally dial him?”
“Ah!” I was stunned for a moment and replied, “Maybe.”
I never expected him to call my dad and pull such a trick. It’s maddening.
“Then you better call him back, it’s so late.” My dad said, turning around in his slippers.
“Okay.”
Closing the door, I cursed him for being shameless.
The phone rang again, right on cue.
This time, I answered.
“Why did you call my dad?” I was truly exasperated.
“Afraid you wouldn’t answer my call, couldn’t sleep tonight.” His voice was a bit hoarse, clearly having drunk a lot and smoked a lot.
“Who can’t sleep!!” I retorted.
He didn’t speak, just chuckled on the other end, making me feel a bit uneasy.
After a while of laughter, just as I was about to hang up, he whispered, “It’s me… it’s me who can’t sleep.”
His voice traveled through my eardrum and spread throughout my body, tingling like an electric shock.
“Stop talking nonsense, I’m hanging up.” I was too embarrassed to respond.
“Don’t hang up…” He quickly stopped me, and after a few seconds, repeated, “Don’t hang up.”
Then he started talking to himself, “Let me hear your voice.”
“Liam Evans, how much did you drink?” How much did he drink to get this drunk, talking nonsense, and starting to ramble.
“Worried about me?” He asked with a smile.
“Worried about you? I’m worried about the little girl next to you.” I replied irritably.
He laughed again, and after a while, seriously said, “There’s no one.”
No one? That doesn’t seem like him.
I didn’t want to engage in pointless chatter, planning to say a few words and hang up, “Did you get home? If you’re home, hang up.”
He hesitated for a moment, completely ignoring my request, and continued, “My cousin came to America today, we drank together.”
“Oh.” I heard Ryan Chen mention he was going away for a few days, turns out he went abroad for an exchange.
“He said he likes you.”
Ryan Chen doesn’t seem like the type to talk about everything, why would he tell Liam Evans?
“Was he drunk? Did you get him drunk?”
“Yeah, I did.” He laughed smugly.
“Did you send him back to the hotel?”
“I just went to drop him off.” He fell silent, and after a while, asked, “Do you like him?”
My heart skipped a beat. I knew the answer myself, but I didn’t want Ryan Chen to find out through someone else.
“Adult matters, don’t meddle.”
He fell silent again, and I heard the sound of a door opening, he must have arrived home.
“Ella Thompson.” His voice was very soft.
“What?” Every time he called my name, I inexplicably felt embarrassed.
“My head is spinning.” His voice became very low, sounding like he was acting spoiled.
Acting spoiled… I was shocked by the term.
“Who told you to drink so much.” I couldn’t do anything to help him from here.
“Because talking about you with my cousin got a bit out of control.” He said with a laugh.
Me: … What does it mean for two men to be discussing me?
“You should shower and rest early.” I tried to change the subject.
“He said you two get along well, you’re great, he likes you a lot, he even thought about confessing to you when he returns, asking me to bless him.”
“Did you bless him?” I didn’t understand why they would talk about this.
“I chose to get him drunk, let him be arrogant in front of me.” He said with a cold laugh.
