Farewell Summer - Chapter 12
To take care of my health, tonight did not last long.
I lay in bed for a while, half-asleep, and heard Xie Shuyan on the phone.
His sharp, icy voice seeped through the door crack.
It was filled with unprecedented hostility.
I got out of bed and quietly opened the door.
Xie Shuyan’s voice came from the living room.
“Mom, I’ve made it clear, this is my business, don’t interfere.”
I gripped the doorknob tightly, a layer of sweat unknowingly forming in my palm.
I knew I shouldn’t eavesdrop, but my legs moved on their own to the corner of the living room.
Xie Shuyan’s mother’s voice became clear.
“If I don’t interfere, should I watch you marry a woman who could die at any moment? You’ve worked so hard to reach this position, why bother?”
Xie Shuyan let out a cold laugh, “And who do you think I reached this position for?”
His mother suddenly fell silent.
“Without Meng Tingyue, there would be no Xie Shuyan today. And the Xie Family wouldn’t have a doctor who works tirelessly, even accompanying you for check-ups.”
“That’s what you should do!”
Xie Shuyan said sternly, “When you altered my college application for money, forcing me to stay local, did you think about today?”
His parents were silent.
Xie Shuyan warned, “If you still care about me, show some respect to Meng Tingyue. If you dare to cause her any trouble, don’t blame me for not acknowledging you.”
With a bang, the phone was slammed onto the coffee table.
At the same time, I shivered and sneezed.
Caught red-handed by Xie Shuyan.
He stood up, rounded the corner, and looked directly at me hiding behind it, eavesdropping.
His angry expression gradually turned to helplessness, and he sighed.
“Aren’t your feet cold?”
I scratched my head, “Oh, I… I came out for some water.”
“Go back, I’ll get it for you.”
“Oh, okay.”
I scurried back quickly, and by the time Xie Shuyan brought the water in, I was already under the covers, with only my eyes peeking out.
Perhaps because he had just argued with his parents, he seemed to carry an air of cold indifference.
I sat up, clutching the blanket, “Was what you said just now true?”
“Which part?”
“The part about them altering your college application.”
Xie Shuyan watched me finish the water, took the empty glass, and said:
“Yes. If I hadn’t logged into the system that afternoon to change my application, I might not have realized they altered it until I received the acceptance letter. So, don’t feel guilty about me changing my application. Without you, there wouldn’t be the me of today.”
In the darkness, I moved closer and hugged Xie Shuyan.
“Is studying medicine hard?”
“It’s not hard.”
“Liar.”
“I’m not lying to you.” Xie Shuyan gently stroked my back, “Sometimes I think, the meeting and reunion of people are destined.”
I mumbled:
“Even if we had never met, would you still think so?”
Xie Shuyan’s gaze was intense, his tone certain: “Yes, no matter how many years pass, Xie Shuyan and Meng Tingyue will always be together, it’s just a matter of time.”
