Chapter 10

“Gu Yanzhou!”

My voice cracked.

He held me so tightly, as if in that single moment, he was willing to shoulder the weight of my very life.

The security guards swarmed in and pinned Gu Zeqian down. He continued to struggle like a madman on the floor, the veins on his neck bulging violently.

“Gu Yanzhou! How can you beat me? She was supposed to be mine!”

“No.”

I was the one who spoke this time.

I stood in front of Gu Yanzhou, looking at Gu Zeqian with a calmness I had never felt before.

“Gu Zeqian, I was never yours. I was blind to have liked you before. Now, even if you were to get down on your knees, I would find you too filthy to touch.”

It was as if those words shattered Gu Zeqian completely; the light in his eyes instantly collapsed. Even as the police handcuffed him, he was still screaming my name.

I didn’t even bother to give him a second glance.

Gu Yanzhou finally reached his limit, his body swaying slightly.

I lunged to support him, and when my hand touched his back, it came away covered in blood. My legs went weak.

“Are you insane? Who told you to take the hit for me!”

Gu Yanzhou’s face was deathly pale, his forehead drenched in sweat. Yet, he still looked down at me and forced a small smile.

“If I didn’t, was I supposed to just watch you get hurt?”

My tears began to fall.

“Shut up!”

On the way to the hospital, I held his hand the entire time, not daring to let go for a second. Gu Yanzhou had lost a lot of blood and his eyelids were heavy, but he still used his thumb to gently stroke the back of my hand, over and over.

“Why are you crying?”

His voice was faint. “I’m not dead yet.”

“If you say another word like that, I’ll throw you out of the car right now.”

Gu Yanzhou let out a low chuckle.

He was clearly in so much pain that his face was white, yet he could still laugh.

The surgery didn’t finish until the early hours of the morning.

The doctor said that if the wound had been half an inch to the side, it would have been trouble. I stood outside the ward, my legs so weak I could barely stay upright. When the door finally opened, I didn’t even dare to breathe too loudly.

Gu Yanzhou woke up sooner than I expected.

He leaned against the hospital bed, his shoulder wrapped in bandages. Seeing me standing there with bloodshot eyes, his first reaction was actually to frown.

“Why are you crying again?”

I walked over and placed the notebook on the bedside table.

“Lin Qingyan told me everything.”

Gu Yanzhou’s gaze darkened slightly.

“Everything-including how you covered my loans, how you hired the doctor for my mother, and how you saw my design drafts four years ago.”

I sniffled, tears splashing down. “Gu Yanzhou, just how much have you been hiding from me?”

The ward fell silent for a long time.

Gu Yanzhou looked up at me, his voice incredibly raspy.

“A lot.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

“Because you wouldn’t have believed me.”

I was suddenly speechless.

He was right.

Back then, I wouldn’t even listen to a single warning from him. How could I have believed that a man rumored to be cold-blooded and ruthless had been silently protecting me for so long?

I stood by the bed, the tip of my nose red from crying.

“Then tell me now.”

Gu Yanzhou looked at me, his Adam’s apple bobbing slowly.

“Xu Yutang, in the beginning, there was indeed calculation involved in marrying you.”

My heart tightened.

But in the next second, he reached out and grabbed my wrist, pulling me close to him.

“But every time I held you after that, every time I wanted to kiss you, every time I wanted to lock you away by my side so no one else could look at you… that was all my own selfishness.”

My breath hitched.

Gu Yanzhou looked up at me, the emotions he had suppressed for a long, long time finally breaking through the surface.

“I didn’t want to see you mistreated by anyone else, and I didn’t want to give you up to anyone. Gu Zeqian didn’t deserve you, and neither does anyone else.”

His fingers tightened inch by inch, his voice low and heavy.

“I liked you much earlier than you realize. So early that while you were still by someone else’s side, I was already thinking about stealing you away.”
