Ex-Kneeling to Call Sister-in-Law - Chapter 9
Chapter 9
The real truth wasn’t uncovered at the model building.
It was Lin Qingyan who told me.
She asked to meet me at a tea house. She looked haggard, having lost all the composure she’d displayed at the wedding. Pushing a stack of medical records and a recording toward me, she got straight to the point.
“I’m not here to make excuses for Gu Zeqian,”
she said. “I’m here to help you put him behind bars.”
Lin Qingyan’s sister had died three years ago because of the faulty equipment brought in for the Old City Project.
Project fraud, equipment downsizing, using models for money laundering-Gu Zeqian and the Gu Family Branch were all involved.
“Gu Yanzhou wasn’t the one who harmed your father.”
Lin Qingyan looked at me. “It was a mistake made by Gu Zeqian’s Uncle’s people. Gu Yanzhou arrived at the scene just in time to seize the most critical forged authorization documents. But if he had exposed everything then, the chain of evidence would have been broken, and the people who truly deserved to go to prison would have escaped untouched.”
My hands were shaking.
So it wasn’t that Gu Yanzhou refused to explain himself.
It was that he couldn’t.
Lin Qingyan played another recording.
It was a conversation between Gu Yanzhou and the Old Madam.
The Old Madam asked, “Is it worth throwing away your marriage for that girl?”
Gu Yanzhou remained silent for a long time before replying in a low voice, “At first, it wasn’t.”
My heart sank.
But a second later, he added, “Later, I couldn’t let go.”
“What if your brother changes his mind?”
“He doesn’t have the right.”
Gu Yanzhou’s voice was cold and raspy. “I’ve given in to him enough since we were children. This time, I’m not yielding.”
My tears fell instantly.
Lin Qingyan looked at me and sighed.
“There’s one more thing. The loan guarantee for your studio wasn’t handled by Gu Zeqian; Gu Yanzhou covered it. And when your mother needed a new doctor, he was the one who made over a dozen calls through the night to bring them in. Miss Xu, that’s just the kind of person he is. He does so much, yet he refuses to say a single word.”
My chest tightened with a sharp pain.
I suddenly remembered that night in the hospital corridor when I had pushed him until his face turned pale, and yet he had only whispered a soft “Okay.”
It wasn’t coldness.
It was pain.
But it was already too late for regrets.
Because that afternoon, Gu Zeqian went completely insane.
Having realized Lin Qingyan had turned against him, he decided to cause a scene at the Gu Group press conference. He even brought my father’s notebook onto the stage, trying to force me to sign the authorization in public.
When I arrived, the hall was in total chaos.
Reporters, shareholders, and security guards were all crammed together. Gu Zeqian stood on the stage like a gambler who had lost everything.
“Xu Yutang, as long as you sign this now, none of today’s mess will have anything to do with you!”
He roared at me. “Otherwise, I’ll destroy your mother’s hospital room, your studio, and what little reputation you have left!”
I was shaking with rage. Just as I was about to walk toward the stage, Gu Yanzhou stepped in front of me, blocking my path.
“Stay behind me,”
he said softly. “Don’t be afraid.”
The next second, the large screen behind him switched displays.
Transfer records, forged authorizations, project fraud, and recordings of bribing the construction team-evidence was hammered out piece by piece, so complete that there was no way out.
The entire room erupted in an uproar.
The color drained from Gu Zeqian’s face instantly. Driven to total madness, he grabbed a jagged piece of metal from a broken display board and lunged toward me.
I didn’t even have time to scream.
Gu Yanzhou had already turned, pulling me entirely into his embrace.
The sharp metal sliced across his shoulder and back. Blood surged out instantly, its heat leaving me numb all over.
