Dreamscape - Chapter 19
Ethan instinctively touched a faint old scar on his earlobe:
“Remember this? You bit me. Just because I was starving and stole the half corn cake you saved.”
“That… who remembers such things clearly…” I guiltily gave him a light punch on the shoulder, but my eyes felt a bit warm.
“But you! Why didn’t you say something earlier?”
“I’ve been waiting for the right moment to speak… a bit afraid.” He rarely showed a hint of hesitation.
“Even you, Ethan Sterling, have things you’re afraid of?”
“Of course.” He admitted frankly, “After all, I broke my promise back then, and I feared you would resent me. More than that…” He paused, looking at me with deep eyes, “I feared you’d only see me as a brother. Once that identity is accepted, then… I can never be anything else.”
Indeed.
If he had initially recognized me as “Goldie Brother,” the barrier within my heart might never have collapsed, and we would never have crossed that boundary.
“After I returned home, I did plead with my parents to support you. But that money was embezzled by Yu Minghui.
“I questioned my parents, but they indifferently told me it was ‘industry practice,’ advising me not to mind. As long as the money was donated in name, it counted as goodwill, regardless of who it truly ‘helped’ in the end.
“But I could never accept that.”
Ethan lowered his gaze, his voice deep and resolute,
“Later, I went back to find you, but the village chief told me you had already moved away.
“From that moment, I was determined to gain real authority. Only when I held enough power could I truly accomplish what I wanted.”
Ethan had two older brothers.
Moreover, his ideals clashed with theirs.
The outside world widely spread that Ethan Sterling was exceptionally gifted and intelligent, allowing him to stand out in family conflicts.
But behind this, the hardships and efforts he endured were unimaginable to ordinary people.
Eventually, he held great power and financial freedom.
And he finally could fulfill his wishes, doing substantial charity work and helping many underprivileged girls.
The only remaining obsession was finding me.
During my senior year in college, he actually saw me.
At first glance, he felt that this girl’s eyes were resilient and bright, making it impossible for him to look away.
For the first time in over twenty years, he experienced the feeling of being moved.
Then, he heard someone beside him call my name.
Avila Winters.
So, this was the girl who haunted his dreams and filled him with guilt.
From that day, thoughts of me filled his days and dreams.
I appeared in his dreams, bringing him immense joy.
…But none of that matters now.
I am deeply shaken by Ethan’s story of rising to power.
Overcoming brothers, challenging parents.
It’s practically a textbook underdog story! That’s exactly how one should fight for everything that belongs to them!
A fierce determination ignited within me:
“This time, we must bring Yu Minghui down completely!”
“Not just him,” Ethan’s eyes flashed with coldness, “I don’t intend to spare any of those who colluded with him, including Lucas Shaw. Avy, can you let go?” He observed my expression.
“Are you underestimating me? How could I not let go of such scum!” My disgust was evident.
The rumors in the company about Ethan and me were probably spread by Lucas, trying to smear me and affect my promotion.
Ethan nodded happily:
“It’s good that you can let go. But he really is useless, couldn’t win you over in a year. I was ready to compete with him fairly.”
Alright, alright, you’re impressive.
After all, you’re my “Goldie” brother!
