Chapter 11
Lucas and I reconnected shortly before graduation.
He was representing his company at a recruitment event at our school.
That day, Allison’s disciplinary issue was still unresolved, and I wasn’t sure if I could find a job smoothly.
Suddenly, Lucas called out to me, “Avila Winters?”
I scrutinized him for a few moments before recalling who he was.
Back in the day, Lucas was also known as the “campus heartthrob.”
He seemed sunny and cheerful, one of the prominent figures on campus.
Unfortunately, I was too busy with my studies and part-time jobs to pay much attention to such things.
My only impression of him was from that time we wore the same outfit, which led to Allison’s jealousy.
Lucas smiled, “It’s okay if you don’t remember me, but I remember you. You were the top student in your major, working so hard that it made me feel ashamed.”
“You’re too modest, senior.”
“Looking for a job?”
“Yes.”
“Interested in joining our company? There’s a position that matches your major, and the salary is quite competitive. The only issue is that the base isn’t local.”
My eyes lit up.
After adding Lucas on WeChat, we only discussed the company details and didn’t delve into other topics.
Until Ethan openly declared his intention to pursue me.
This brought me unprecedented attention.
Even more than when I reported Allison for cheating.
But inside, I felt lost.
Was this disparity in status, this “affection,” truly a good thing?
In the eyes of others, it seemed as if being favored by this man meant my life was complete.
Then what was all my hard work, getting into a prestigious school, for?
After careful consideration, I accepted the job opportunity Lucas recommended.
But before leaving, I had to personally end those dreams.
Ethan was still asleep.
I quietly got up and boarded the train heading north.
