Chapter 8
With Jiang Ciyue refusing to budge, we were at a stalemate.
A week went by.
One evening, a gathering with friends ended late. My car was at the shop, and my friends were worried about me taking a cab, so one of them, Su He, offered me a ride home.
To my surprise, Jiang Ciyue was waiting downstairs.
The moment he saw Su He next to me, Jiang Ciyue went berserk. He grabbed Su He by the collar and threw a punch.
Su He was completely blindsided, caught in a mess that had nothing to do with him.
Enraged by Jiang Ciyue’s brutish and violent behavior, I rushed forward and slapped him hard across the face.
“Jiang Ciyue, are you insane? If you want to act crazy, go find Qu Yi. Stop tormenting me!”
His bloodshot eyes stared at me, his voice thick with an anger he couldn’t hide.
“Shi Wan Ju, didn’t you say you loved me? Didn’t you say you couldn’t live without me?”
“If you love me, why are you messing around with some other man?”
“Is it because of him? Is that why you’re so desperate to divorce me?”
He was the one who cheated.
How did he have the audacity to turn this on me?
It was absurd, laughable.
“Why would you think that I could still love you after you destroyed my grandmother’s house, burned my paintings, and had me thrown into the sea to die?”
“Jiang Ciyue, I’m not that pathetic.”
Even the deepest love can be worn away by one injury after another.
Now, when I looked at him, I felt nothing.
Jiang Ciyue froze, a look of genuine confusion on his face. “When did I have you thrown into the sea?”
I threw his own words back at him.
“You do something wicked and then you don’t even have the guts to admit it. You’re pathetic!”
While Jiang Ciyue was still processing, I turned to Su He and apologized.
“I’m so sorry you got dragged into this. If you’re free tomorrow night, I’d like to treat you to dinner to make it up to you.”
Su He brushed it off with a smile. “I’m fine, don’t worry about it. If I’m going to blame anyone, it’s going to be your hyper-aggressive jerk of an ex-husband.”
The friends at the gathering tonight were all people I’d known for years.
They all knew about Jiang Ciyue and Qu Yi’s sordid affair.
When I told them I was getting a divorce, every single one of them cheered.
By now, Jiang Ciyue had snapped out of his shock.
He glared at Su He and roared, “Shut up! Wan Ju and I are not divorced yet!”
Su He scoffed. “Soon enough, ex-hubby!”
“A渣男 like you who doesn’t know how to cherish someone? You deserve to be dumped by Wan Ju!”
Jiang Ciyue was trained in Muay Thai; most people were no match for him.
Seeing the fury in his eyes intensify, I was afraid he would get violent again, so I urged Su He to leave.
“It’s late, you should go home. Don’t worry, I can handle this.”
Su He nodded. “Alright. Call me if you need anything.”
I smiled. “I will.”
After watching him leave, I turned my icy gaze to Jiang Ciyue.
“If you’re not here to discuss the divorce, you can get lost now.”
I turned to go upstairs.
Suddenly, his hand clamped around my wrist.
His voice was urgent. “I didn’t have anyone push you into the sea. Don’t believe what other people say to frame me.”
“I will investigate this and I will give you an explanation.”
It was laughable. In the past, Qu Yi had framed me so many times, and Jiang Ciyue never once believed my explanations.
Now the tables were turned, and he was getting a taste of what it felt like to be unable to defend himself.
I coldly pulled my wrist free, a sarcastic smile on my lips. “It doesn’t matter. You’ve hurt me so many times, one more or one less makes no difference.”
“Right now, all I want is a divorce. I hope the next time I see you, it’s at the civil affairs office.”
With that, I walked away, ignoring his pale, stricken face.
