Chapter 11
I only found out about Qu Yi and her friends being sent to prison two weeks later, from Jiang Ciyue himself.
After explaining everything, he made me a promise.
“I will have nothing more to do with Qu Yi.”
“Wan Ju, and you shouldn’t see Su He anymore either. Let’s just live our lives together, properly, from now on.”
Su He and I were just friends, but I felt no need to explain that to Jiang Ciyue.
And honestly, I couldn’t understand him at all.
“You don’t even love me, so why won’t you agree to a divorce? What’s the point of this?”
A look of sorrow crossed his face. He touched his chest and whispered, “When I hear you talk about divorce, when I see you with Su He, it hurts right here. It hurts so much I can barely breathe.”
“I don’t know if this is love, Wan Ju, but I think… I can’t live without you.”
I thought he had lost his mind.
“Why should I care if you can live without me?”
“All I know is that even looking at you irritates me.”
“If you won’t agree to a divorce, then I’ll see you in court!”
The drama surrounding our divorce became so big that it inevitably reached our parents’ ears.
That day, my parents showed up at my apartment.
My father, furious, banged his cane on the floor. “How long are you going to keep this up? Get this ridiculous idea of divorce out of your head right now!”
I had been a good, obedient daughter my whole life.
But this time, I wasn’t going to listen.
“Dad, it doesn’t matter if you disapprove. I am getting this divorce, no matter what.”
My defiance sent him into a rage.
He pointed his finger at my nose and yelled, “I was the one who hired someone to drug you and Ciyue! I was the one who made sure reporters blew the story up! I went through all that trouble to marry you into the Jiang family!”
“And you, you useless thing! It’s bad enough that you couldn’t capture Ciyue’s heart, but now you can’t even hold onto your position as Mrs. Jiang. What good are you to me?”
His words were like a clap of thunder on a clear day.
I stared at him, stunned, my voice trembling. “What did you just say?”
Seeing my reaction, my mother quickly tried to explain. “Wan Ju, your father’s company was in financial trouble back then. Our family was about to lose everything.”
“By marrying you to Ciyue, the Jiang family invested in our business and saved it. He had no other choice. Please don’t blame him.”
“Besides, you’ve loved Ciyue for so many years. Your father was helping you fulfill your dream. It was a win-win situation.”
Tears streamed down my face. I was on the verge of a breakdown.
“Helping me? Do you have any idea that Jiang Ciyue has hated me for three years because he thought I was the one who set him up?”
“All these years, all the pain I’ve been through, it was all because of you!”
I never imagined that the people who pushed me into this abyss were my own parents.
But my father saw nothing wrong with his actions.
“Without me, would you be living in such an expensive apartment, wearing such expensive clothes?”
“You are a beneficiary of all this. You have no right to say I harmed you.”
“You’re miserable because you’re incompetent.”
“Even trash like Qu Yi could make Ciyue fall for her, but you couldn’t. That just proves you’re a failure!”
At that point, there was nothing more to say.
I was completely disillusioned with my parents. “Fine,” I said with finality. “I’m a failure. So please, both of you, stay away from me. From now on, just pretend you never had a daughter!”
He stormed out, slamming the door behind him. “Fine! I’d love to see how miserable your life becomes when I stop giving you money!”
My mother, worried about his health, hurried after him.
