Chapter 11
The next day, as usual, I went for my prenatal check-up, but unexpectedly, someone dragged me into an alley.
Seeing that familiar face, every hair on my body stood on end.
Seven years ago, this person I called my brother came to me for money on the day of my check-up and pushed me down the stairs.
I had a miscarriage, but my mom knelt and begged me not to report it, saying he didn’t mean it.
My brother was originally staring at me with a sinister look, but his gaze slowly shifted downward, and suddenly, his expression turned strange.
“Aren’t you unable to have children? How come you’re pregnant again?”
I guarded my belly carefully, glaring at him warily, “You spent six years in prison for that incident, wasn’t that lesson enough?”
The thugs my brother brought along said, “Didn’t they say she has a wealthy ex-husband? This child should be her ex-husband’s, right?”
“It’s not his.” Seeing my brother seemed to be planning to call someone, I spoke up.
My brother squinted at me, but still dialed the number.
“Hello?”
I thought I was calm enough, but the moment that deep voice came through, my heart skipped a beat.
“Brother-in-law, I’m here with my sister, and I’m a bit short on cash lately–”
“It has nothing to do with me.” Before he could finish, Jiang Du hung up the phone.
“What do we do?” The group exchanged glances.
“Your current actions already constitute extortion. You just got out, if you’re short on money, I can help you find a job.”
Seeing their expressions start to waver, I said, “I can pretend today’s incident never happened.”
As I turned to leave, my wrist was suddenly grabbed.
It was a tall, skinny man, his gaze brazen and scorching, “You’re quite pretty.”
What happened next, I don’t remember clearly.
It seemed he tried to touch my face, and I instinctively slapped him.
Then.
Then.
He pushed me to the ground, but before he could do anything, the sound of police sirens began faintly, then grew clearer.
I instinctively curled into a ball, and as my body moved slightly, the pain that seemed to surge from every limb gathered in my abdomen, becoming intense in an instant.
“Nannan!”
In a daze, I seemed to see Jiang Du–
His face pale, much thinner than before.
He wore a gray hat, running towards me through the falling snow.
“Weren’t you supposed to not care? Why come so quickly?” My brother’s voice, full of resentment, reached my ears.
Jiang Du crouched down, seemingly about to say something, and then I saw someone behind him raise a knife, stabbing towards him fiercely.
