Chapter 12
Officer Zhang pointed at the surveillance screen and explained to us, “Our colleagues from the Technical Department processed the surveillance footage, playing it frame by frame with image enhancement tools. They found that the edges of the suspect’s glasses showed no refraction or distortion, nor any reflection.”
“So, this means the suspects were in disguise. The glasses they both wore had no lenses, only frames.”
“Why is that?” I blurted out.
Officer Zhang said, “We’re wondering about that too. We’re considering whether it could be someone familiar with you, because with both masks and glasses, maybe they were still afraid of being recognized.”
He turned to Ding Ning and asked, “Do you have any impression of these two people?”
Ding Ning looked pained, a fine sweat breaking out on her forehead. She shook her head desperately, unable to say a word.
I pulled her into my arms. “You found out just this little bit and called us over, upsetting my wife-what’s the point?”
Officer Zhang said, “We just wanted you to confirm whether it could be someone you know, like an enemy.”
I snorted coldly. “Even though I’m in business, I don’t have any enemies.”
Officer Zhang said, “By the way, we went to see Zhao Ben today to investigate.”
My heart tightened. He wouldn’t say anything reckless, would he?
“He said that he did meet with Ms. Ding Ning that day, but nothing special happened between them. We carefully compared him to the images in the surveillance footage and checked his DNA. His didn’t match.”
“If it wasn’t someone familiar, and there’s no match in the DNA database, then most likely it was still a random stranger committing the crime. For now, we can only put the case on hold and wait for new leads.”
The stone in my heart was finally, if only temporarily, lifted.
Ding Ning and I left the police station together, holding each other.
I hadn’t asked the driver to take us to the station today; I drove myself.
After driving for a while, Ding Ning suddenly spoke: “Your little sister is due next month?”
I grunted in acknowledgment and replied, “She wants to go to Hong Kong to have her baby. So much has happened lately. Why don’t you go with her for a while? We can figure out our plans for the future later…”
Ding Ning interrupted me. “Zhong Huiming, do you really think that after everything that’s happened, I can still go on living with you?”
I looked at her in surprise. Why not?
In fact, the crisis was over.
Ding Ning sneered, “You don’t still expect me to raise your sister’s child, do you?”
I felt baffled. “Did I mention that today?”
Ding Ning said, “Do you even need to?”
I was starting to lose patience. “What do you want, then?”
Ding Ning said softly, “I want a divorce.”
A divorce? I’m not afraid.
Before we got married, we signed a prenuptial agreement. If we divorce, since Ding Ning hasn’t had any children, she won’t get much out of it.
I sped up the car and agreed, “Fine.”
Ding Ning didn’t say another word the whole way.
When the car stopped in the garage, I unbuckled my seatbelt and was about to get out when Ding Ning suddenly spoke, her words ringing out clearly: “One hundred million.”
“What?” I thought I misheard.
“One hundred million.”
“One hundred million, and we divorce cleanly, with everything settled. Also, I’ll help you completely take care of the Zhao Ben problem.”
One hundred million? So my wife was the one eyeing me all along.
This was the real lion’s share.
