Chapter 98
Chapter 98
Su Hua paused, feeling quite surprised.
She had been trying to conceive for a while, carefully tracking her cycle, but had never been successful. This time, she hadn’t given it much thought, and yet, she had unexpectedly fallen pregnant without any fanfare.
Gu Beixian tossed the grilled squid in his hand into a nearby trash can and said, “Let’s go home. I’ll have Aunt Liu prepare postpartum meals for you.”
Su Hua didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Postpartum meals are for after the baby is born, during the recovery period.”
“Then have her make nutritious meals. It’s basically the same thing anyway.”
He took her hand and walked briskly toward the car. While he remained composed on the surface, the joy in his heart was beyond words.
Su Hua, on the other hand, was much calmer.
Halfway there, she spotted a pharmacy by the roadside and said, “Let’s go in and buy a pregnancy test. My period is occasionally late by two or three days, so it’s safer to check.”
“Alright. Wait in the car; I’ll go buy it.”
The driver opened the car door. Gu Beixian held his hand over the top of the door frame, afraid she might bump her head. Su Hua leaned over and sat inside.
A short while later, Gu Beixian returned to the car carrying a transparent plastic bag from the pharmacy.
“Here.”
Su Hua reached out to take it and saw that there were at least ten pregnancy tests inside. She was caught between laughter and tears. “One is enough. Why did you buy so many? It’s a waste.”
Gu Beixian dismissed her concern. “It’s fine. The more, the better.”
Su Hua couldn’t do anything with him.
Once they got home, she followed the instructions and took a test. Sure enough, there were two lines. She tried several more, and they all showed two lines.
She really was pregnant!
Su Hua walked out holding a pregnancy test, her face beaming with joy. “I really am pregnant! Look, two lines!”
Gu Beixian was sitting on the sofa. He glanced at the test, his expression turning solemn.
The smile on Su Hua’s face froze. “Haven’t you always wanted a child? Now that I’m actually pregnant, why aren’t you happy?”
Gu Beixian rubbed his brow, his expression cold and stern. “If I had known you were pregnant, I shouldn’t have taken you to the pool to learn how to swim today. It was too dangerous.”
The more he thought about it, the more he felt a lingering fear. If anything had happened, he couldn’t even bear to imagine the consequences. He was spiraling into deep self-reproach.
To put his mind at ease, Su Hua sat down beside him and said in a lighthearted tone, “So that’s why. It’s fine, I’m perfectly okay, so don’t worry. You can never have too many skills, and Coach Gu did a great job teaching today. I give you a hundred percent.”
“You certainly are carefree,” Gu Beixian said, pulling her onto his lap.
He placed his fingers on her lower abdomen, stroking it gently, wanting to feel the child. But Su Hua’s stomach was flat; there was nothing to feel. Instead, the contact only made him feel flushed.
His Adam’s apple bobbed as he suppressed his urges. To distract himself, he picked up his phone to call Qin Shu.
Just as the number was dialing, he suddenly thought of something and lifted Su Hua off his lap. “I need to make a call. There’s radiation, so stay away from me.”
Su Hua couldn’t help but laugh. “You really are being overprotective.”
Gu Beixian didn’t deny it. “It’s my child; of course I care.”
Su Hua obediently sat on the other side of the sofa, a full three meters away from him.
Once the call connected, Gu Beixian reined in his emotions and said expressionlessly, “Ms. Qin, congratulations. Your precious daughter-in-law is pregnant. You’re going to be a grandmother.”
Su Hua clicked her tongue in amazement. It was clearly he who was happy and wanted to spread the news, yet he was doing it under the guise of congratulating Qin Shu.
Qin Shu’s bell-like laughter rang out from the phone. “Congratulations to us both! Congratulations, President Gu, you’re going to be a father.”
Su Hua hadn’t realized it before, but this mother and son were quite amusing. Based on their appearances, they both seemed like cold, unapproachable figures who rarely smiled.
Gu Beixian asked, “Do you want to tell your husband the good news?”
Qin Shu’s voice turned cold. “No need. He doesn’t deserve to know.”
Gu Beixian curled his lips. “He certainly doesn’t.”
Qin Shu said stiffly, “Once Su Hua gives birth, don’t let him see the child, don’t let him hold the child, and definitely don’t let the child call him ‘Grandpa’.”
Gu Beixian agreed. “Definitely.”
Qin Shu instructed, “You must take good care of my daughter-in-law. Don’t upset her. When a woman is pregnant, her hormones get disrupted, and her temperament changes. Whether she loses her temper or acts petty, you have to endure it. You are not allowed to make my daughter-in-law angry.”
Gu Beixian remained composed. “You don’t need to tell me. I know what I’m doing.”
Qin Shu urged again, “Stay away from Chu Suosuo, and stay away from any other female creature. Don’t give Su Hua any reason to misunderstand.”
Gu Beixian gave a faint hum of acknowledgment and hung up the phone.
The room was very quiet, and Su Hua had heard everything Qin Shu said.
She was deeply moved.
How could there be such a reasonable mother-in-law?
Gu Beixian started dialing Grandma Gu’s number to tell her the news.
Seeing that he looked like he couldn’t wait to announce it to the whole world, Su Hua smiled and stopped him. “Let’s go to the hospital to confirm it tomorrow morning before telling Grandma. It would be quite embarrassing if I’m not actually pregnant.”
Gu Beixian paused. “That works too.”
He instructed Aunt Liu to prepare some delicious, light meals.
Su Hua didn’t have much of an appetite, so she just forced herself to eat a little.
Gu Beixian then called the driver to buy some sweet and sour fruits to help stimulate her appetite.
That night, when it was time for bed…
He pushed the sofa over to block the side of the bed where Su Hua slept, preventing her from falling out.
After getting into bed, he had Su Hua sleep in the middle.
He, on the other hand, lay right on the very edge, so far over that he was practically falling off.
Su Hua said helplessly, “There’s really no need for this. We can sleep just like we used to. I’m pregnant, not injured.”
“This is fine. You’re a national treasure now; you have to be enshrined.”
Su Hua was truly at a loss with him.
However, she also felt quite happy.
The next morning.
Su Hua went on an empty stomach.
Gu Beixian accompanied her to the hospital for an examination.
She needed blood work to check for anemia, rule out infectious diseases and hereditary family conditions, and test her HCG-human chorionic gonadotropin-levels.
After the doctor issued the lab slips…
Gu Beixian accompanied Su Hua to the clinical laboratory on the first floor for the blood draw.
During the procedure…
The female doctor tied a rubber tourniquet around Su Hua’s arm and patted her vein.
Once the vein bulged, the doctor held the needle, just about to prick her.
Gu Beixian suddenly spoke up to remind her, “My wife has thin skin and is afraid of pain. Please be gentle when you insert the needle.”
Although his words were polite, he had spent a long time in high positions and possessed the temperament of a young master.
No matter how he said it, his tone carried a hint of being high and mighty.
Doctors drew blood from so many people every day that their work pressure was immense, and they generally didn’t have the best tempers.
Hearing Gu Beixian being so fussy and speaking with such a firm tone, the doctor was just about to glare at him.
But when she looked up, she saw a face so handsome it was almost a crime against nature.
His face was as smooth as fine jade, with sharp brows and eyes like bright stars. His features were sculpted, radiating an overbearing air of nobility.
That face possessed both the three-dimensional contours of a Westerner and the refined elegance of an Easterner-a reserved grace that was peerless in this world.
He looked very much like a younger version of John Lone.
The female doctor was a sucker for good looks.
Caught off guard by such divine beauty, her heart fluttered, and her eyes instantly crinkled into a smile.
She said beamishly, “Don’t worry, don’t worry. I’ll definitely be gentle when I give your wife the injection. Very gentle.”
Su Hua thanked her softly.
Sure enough.
The doctor’s prick didn’t hurt at all; it felt just like a mosquito bite.
Su Hua sighed inwardly. Using a honey trap really works.
This was the least painful blood draw she had ever experienced.
She decided that if anything like this happened again in the future, she would definitely bring Gu Beixian along.
After the needle was out, the doctor pressed a cotton swab against the site and untied the tourniquet.
Gu Beixian took the cotton swab and held it for Su Hua.
He helped her stand up and asked, “Are you dizzy? Do you want me to carry you?”
Su Hua said helplessly, “I’m not that delicate. It was only a tiny bit of blood.”
Gu Beixian glanced at the blood the doctor had drawn-three full vials. His gaze cooled slightly. “That’s not a small amount. You’re thin to begin with.”
After they walked away…
The female doctor set the blood samples aside and sighed to her colleague, “See? Who says handsome men are all playboys? Look at how well that handsome guy just now treats his wife.”
Her colleague replied while working, “Exactly. These days, it’s the opposite-the handsomer they are, the more devoted they are.”
“That man was so handsome. Why haven’t I ever met one like that?” The female doctor was dying of regret.
Her colleague rolled her eyes at her. “Well, you’d have to look as good as his wife first.”
The female doctor sighed. “With both of them being so good-looking, can you imagine how beautiful their child will be?”
Two hours later.
Su Hua received the lab results.
It was one hundred percent confirmed-she was pregnant!
Gu Beixian immediately took out his phone and called Grandma Gu. He got straight to the point: “Grandma, you have a great-grandson. Congratulations, you’re about to be promoted to great-grandmother.”
For a long while, there was no sound from the phone.
Grandma Gu’s hand was trembling as she held the device.
She was so moved that she couldn’t say a single word.
She wept for joy, old tears streaming down her face.
