Chapter 21
Chapter 21
Seeing that both of them doubted her, Chu Suosuo hurriedly held out her injured hand and said, “Grandma, not two days later, my hand was also smashed with a hammer. It was a comminuted fracture. I was so miserable I didn’t even want to live anymore.”
The old lady lifted her eyelids slightly. “What a coincidence.”
Chu Suosuo’s eyes reddened. “My injury is the same as Sister Su Hua’s-the left hand, four fingers. The police inferred that it was a malicious act of revenge.”
She pointed the finger directly at Su Hua.
A cold sneer played on the old lady’s lips. “Is that so? Why would someone seek revenge on you and not anyone else?”
With tears brimming in her eyes, Chu Suosuo said aggrievedly, “Perhaps it’s because Beixian and I have been getting too close, and it made Sister Su Hua unhappy.”
Her meaning couldn’t be clearer: Su Hua had hired someone to retaliate against her.
Su Hua’s expression remained calm, but a faint trace of mockery flashed in the depths of her eyes. This woman’s ability to play the victim and strike first was becoming more sophisticated by the day.
The old lady snorted coldly, ignoring Chu Suosuo. She turned to look at Gu Beixian. “Send someone to find that grave robber’s sister. Question her thoroughly and see if someone instigated her or promised her some kind of benefit. I have a feeling this isn’t as simple as it looks.”
“Alright.” Gu Beixian fell into thought for a moment before taking his phone outside to call his assistant.
The old lady looked coldly at Chu Suosuo. “Is there anything else?”
Chu Suosuo said obediently, “Nothing else. I just came to visit you, Grandma.”
The old lady’s face hardened. “Now that you’ve seen me, you can leave.”
Chu Suosuo’s face paled slightly. “Grandma, I grew up under your watch. Can you please stop being so harsh with me? You used to dote on me so much.”
The old lady pursed her lips and remained silent.
Chu Suosuo choked out, “When Beixian was injured three years ago, I wanted to stay by his side and keep him company, but my mother sent people to forcibly take me abroad and had me watched twenty-four hours a day. I missed Beixian so much I fell into a severe depression. I loved him so much, yet we were torn apart. When I heard he got married, I cried for three whole days. I was so desperate I didn’t want to live.”
She stood there with tearful eyes and a dejected look, looking exactly like a wounded puppy.
Anyone who saw her would feel pity.
The old lady’s expression softened slightly. “Three years ago, when the doctors announced that Beixian would never be able to stand again, I could understand why you left. After all, the gap was too large; most people wouldn’t be able to accept it. Regardless of whether you left voluntarily or were forced, you two have already broken up, and Beixian is married. It’s wrong of you to come back and try to destroy their marriage now, do you understand?”
Chu Suosuo wiped her eyes. “I’m not trying to destroy Beixian’s marriage. I just can’t help wanting to see him. Grandma, I don’t have any ill intentions, truly.”
Su Hua, showing a bit of restraint, spoke in a casual yet cold tone. “You’ve already been hugging and clinging to him, yet you say you aren’t trying to destroy anything. Then tell me, Miss Chu, what exactly counts as ‘destroying’ in your book?”
Chu Suosuo bit her lip. “Beixian and I were childhood sweethearts. We’ve loved each other for over a decade. Habits can’t be changed overnight. In the future, I will try my best-I’ll try to be more mindful.”
“Loved each other for over a decade.” Those few words sounded light, but their lethality was immense.
An indescribable discomfort settled in Su Hua’s heart, like a heavy stone wedged in her chest, causing a dull ache.
Compared to their ten-plus years of history, her three years of marriage as a substitute seemed utterly insignificant.
With a click, the door opened.
Gu Beixian walked back in after finishing his call.
Su Hua paused for a second, then stood up. She went over to meet him, linking her arm through his, and said with a smile, “Hubby, let’s not get a divorce anymore, okay?”
Gu Beixian’s expression froze slightly. He looked down at her, his gaze unreadable.
Su Hua reached out to steady him by his waist, stood on her tiptoes, and whispered into his ear, “Just agree for now.”
The words were meant for him, but her eyes were fixed on Chu Suosuo.
Her usually indifferent and non-confrontational nature had been forced into a fighting spirit.
Whether there was love or not didn’t matter anymore; she just wanted to win against Chu Suosuo.
She wanted to show her: so what if they were childhood sweethearts? So what if they had loved each other for over a decade?
It was all in the past.
She was his wife now.
Gu Beixian glanced at the teary-eyed Chu Suosuo and gave an extremely faint hum of affirmation.
Su Hua’s heart, which had been in her throat, finally settled. She reached out and took his hand, having been truly afraid just now that he would refuse her.
After a moment, Gu Beixian tried to pull his hand away, but Su Hua gripped it tightly, refusing to let go.
Chu Suosuo stared at their intertwined hands, and tears began to stream down her face.
Clutching her mouth, she turned and ran out.
Gu Beixian said to Su Hua, “I’ll see her back to her ward. She has severe depression; it’s easy for something to happen if she runs off like that.”
“I’ll go with you.”
Gu Beixian’s brow furrowed slightly. “Su Hua, what’s wrong with you today?”
“You are my husband…”
“I never said I wasn’t.”
Seeing that they were about to argue, the old lady hurriedly spoke up. “The two of you should go together.”
They walked out one after the other and saw Chu Suosuo waiting by the elevator. She was covering her mouth, weeping silently, her shoulders shaking-she looked utterly pitiful.
People nearby were watching her with curiosity.
Gu Beixian strode over, took a handkerchief from his pocket, and handed it to her. “Wipe your tears,” he said gently.
Su Hua stood there, feeling fragile and brittle, watching from a distance as her husband showed such meticulous care for his ex-girlfriend. It felt like needles were pricking her heart.
Chu Suosuo took the handkerchief, glanced at Su Hua, and sobbed, “Beixian, you should go back with Sister Su Hua. Otherwise, she’ll get angry again.”
She lowered her head to look at her own hand and whispered, “I’m afraid she’ll misunderstand and take it out on me again. My left hand is already ruined; I don’t want my right hand to be ruined too.”
Although she wasn’t close, the VIP corridor wasn’t crowded, and Su Hua heard every word clearly.
It was the first time she had ever met someone who could dump a bucket of filth on someone else’s head with just a few words.
No wonder Gu Nanyin said she had been full of schemes since she was a child. Truly, she had far too many crooked ideas; Su Hua was finally learning just how many.
Su Hua watched Gu Beixian quietly, wanting to hear what he would say.
After a moment of silence, Gu Beixian spoke. “Su Hua didn’t send anyone to do it. I know her; she’s a good person.”
Su Hua turned and walked away.
Those words made her feel slightly better.
She was afraid that if she stayed any longer, her heart would be pierced again.
Returning to the ward, Su Hua sat down quietly by the bed.
Though she was sitting there, her heart was tethered to Gu Beixian, constantly wondering what the two of them were doing at that moment.
Seeing her looking so despondent, the old lady took her hand sympathetically and said, “Hua’er, you should hurry up and have a child. Once you have a child, your marriage will be stable. A child is the bond of a marriage; it can tie the two of you tightly together.”
Su Hua’s heart was a tangle of emotions.
For the first two years of their marriage, Gu Beixian’s health had been poor, and they couldn’t have a physical relationship.
After his legs recovered and they could, he always used protection, so she couldn’t get pregnant.
Besides, could a child really stabilize a marriage that was already so precarious and on the verge of collapse?
If they ended up divorcing anyway, it would be too hard on the child. She had grown up in a single-parent household herself and understood that pain better than anyone.
However, seeing the expectant look in Grandma’s eyes, Su Hua couldn’t bear to disappoint her. She gave a faint smile and said, “Alright, I’ll work hard at it.”
The old lady laughed happily and patted her head affectionately. “You’re such a good girl-beautiful and smart. With such good genes, you’ll definitely have a big, healthy son who everyone will love.”
Su Hua felt a bit embarrassed by the praise and said, “Grandma, you’re flattering me.”
“I’m telling the truth. Three years ago, when I was picking a wife for Beixian, I went specifically to the universities to look. I wanted someone pretty, with good grades, and who was well-behaved. I looked and looked but wasn’t satisfied with anyone until the principal showed me your file. As soon as I saw your photo-hey, I knew I wanted this girl! You were practically tailor-made for our Beixian.”
Su Hua knew in her heart that everything else was secondary. The main reason was that she looked like Chu Suosuo.
