After My Roommate Dumped His Online Boyfriend on Me - Chapter 4
Fang Feng folded his arms, looking ready to enjoy the show.
He’d done it on purpose.
I kept my head down, not daring to look at Fang Jindong.
His wheelchair drew closer and closer.
I could hear nothing around me anymore. Only my own heartbeat, deafening in my ears.
Beneath that pounding, I waited for my death sentence.
In that moment, I wasn’t really afraid.
Mostly, I just felt that I’d wronged Fang Jindong.
He was such a good person. If only I’d been the first one to meet him.
The comments streamed past again.
[Oh no, oh no. Things were going so well, and now they’re falling apart. I said Fang Feng was a sneaky little bastard!]
[Boo-hoo, my little cannon fodder. Is he still doomed to get written out?]
[Cannon fodder should’ve died ages ago. He already got all these extra days. What a bargain for him.]
[Come on, girls. Report the one above. Get them muted.]
The plate made a faint clink as it touched the table.
I heard that familiar, clear, gentle voice.
“You remembered wrong. I said he was allergic to grapes.”
Fang Feng sounded absolutely certain. “Impossible, ge. I wouldn’t remember that wrong.”
Fang Jindong looked straight at him. His usual warmth was gone.
The coldness around him was so oppressive I could barely breathe.
“You remembered wrong. I said grapes.”
“Why are you standing there? Come help me cook.”
“…Coming, ge.”
Reluctantly, Fang Feng followed him. Before he left, he threw me another glance.
“Tch.”
As though he was disappointed he hadn’t caught me red-handed.
Tch, tch, tch. Keep making that noise and I’ll pull your tongue out.
I seethed uselessly in their direction.
[Little cannon fodder, use your head. Could you look through their chat history when you have a moment?]
[All these heart attacks, day in, day out. I work all day and come home exhausted, and then I still have to worry about the Mu family drama.]
Good point.
I took out my phone and switched to the alt account.
I didn’t know whether most of the old messages weren’t showing up on the new device because there was no cloud backup, or whether they’d barely talked to begin with.
Looking through the history from before I’d taken over, I found only a few messages each day.
Sometimes there wasn’t a single one for ages.
I searched for “mango.” Nothing.
“Grapes” got nothing either.
My heart sank. Most likely, the new device just didn’t show the old messages.
Now I was even more miserable.
Every day was like walking on thin ice.
When they took me back to campus, Fang Feng slipped up behind me while the driver helped Fang Jindong into the car.
“Xia-ge, you’d better pray you can keep fooling him for the rest of your life.”
“If you make my brother sad even once, I’ll make you pay.”
The rest of my life?
He wanted me to keep doing this for a whole lifetime?
I nodded thoughtfully. Before getting into the car, I turned back and said with complete sincerity, “Thank you for your blessing.”
Fang Jindong looked at me curiously. “What is it?”
“Your brother wished us a lifetime together.”
Outside the car window, Fang Feng’s mouth twitched.
The day my offer from Inspiration arrived, Fang Jindong and I were still on the island.
It was also my birthday. He didn’t know.
I didn’t dare tell him.
Without the complete chat history on the alt account, I had no idea whether Ying Chen had ever told him his own birthday.
I was terrified that one wrong word would expose me and put an end even to these stolen days.
All I could do was wheedle like a child and beg him to come see the island bookstore Winter had designed.
Fang Jindong suspected nothing. He got up bright and early to catch the ferry with me.
The sea wind roared in my ears. On deck, holding a half-empty bottle of cola, I took a birthday-cake candle out of my pocket.
I’d lit it many times. Only half the candle remained, and its wick was black.
They didn’t allow anything for lighting fires on board. I could only cradle the candle in secret.
“I hope Fang Jindong will always stay by my side.”
“Shengxia.”
The familiar voice came from behind me. I hurriedly tucked the candle away.
I tried to sound casual. “What is it?”
“It’s windy. Don’t catch a cold. Let’s go back to our room.”
“Okay.”
I pushed his wheelchair toward our room. As soon as the door opened, I saw a cake box on the table by the window.
The cake was small but exquisitely made.
It didn’t look like the premade food normally served on board.
My eyes burned at once, but panic stirred in my heart. What if he’d found something out?
“Why is there a cake here?”
Fang Jindong looked a little puzzled too. “It wasn’t here when I went out. A server must have left it. Probably a dessert before the meal.”
His gaze was clear. He didn’t look as though he was lying.
“Since it’s complimentary, have some to tide you over. It does look good.”
With tears in my eyes, I scooped up a bite and put it in my mouth.
My phone chimed with an email. It was the offer from Inspiration.
A preliminary screening and two rounds of interviews, with only two internship places. The competition had been fierce.
Success in the real world always gives you heart.
I couldn’t hold back anymore. Overcome, I threw myself onto Fang Jindong as huge tears spilled down my face.
“F-Fang Jindong, I got it. I got the offer!”
He grunted at the impact but still patted my back gently. “You earned it, Shengxia.”
“Boo-hoo…”
I buried my fluffy head against his neck. The lovely scent of fir filled my nose.
“Don’t. That tickles.”
The more he told me to stop, the more I wanted to keep going.
A wicked thought struck. My hands grew bolder and bolder on his body.
For a man in a wheelchair, his waist and stomach were remarkably firm.
“Mm-hmm. Somebody’s been working out, Fang Jindong~”
“Stop teasing, Shengxia. Really, stop… mm…”
Those soft lips were right there, within reach of my breath.
I swallowed and kissed him.
Fang Jindong was actually very strong. His large hands held me securely, as though he was afraid I’d fall out of his lap.
Our first kiss was nothing but awkward inexperience.
That line from the first comments—“When he has stamina, he uses that on you too”—slipped into my head for no good reason.
It burned so hot that I pulled away at once.
Fang Jindong looked at me with liquid, shimmering eyes.
Biting my lip, I asked, “Is this okay?”
He laughed softly. “You’re asking after you’ve already kissed me? Shengxia, I’m yours to do with as you please.”
The words struck hard at my heart.
There was so much feeling in them. How much love, how much trust, did it take to say something like that?
I’m yours to do with as you please.
I’m giving all of myself to you.
I’d grown up in an orphanage. The love of the director we called Mom belonged to every child.
I’d never had someone belong to me so completely.
My eyes burned. I bit Fang Jindong’s lips with something close to ferocity.
Who cared when he found out? For every day he stayed beside me, Mu Shengxia,
he, Fang Jindong, was mine!
I kissed without the slightest idea what I was doing. I even bit his lip until it bled.
But when my hot tears fell, he was still the first one to hurt for me.
“Shengxia, why are you crying?”
I didn’t answer. I only wanted to leave something on him, something that would tell everyone he was mine.
But I had nothing. Only the pull tab from my cola bottle, tossed carelessly into my pocket.
I took it out and pushed it onto his little finger, doing my best to look fierce.
“Wear it. You’re not allowed to take it off.”
With the warm pad of his thumb, he wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes.
Then he took a jewelry box from the storage bag on his wheelchair. Inside was a pair of matching sunflower gemstone rings.
They looked like part of the same collection as the brooch.
He slipped one onto the middle finger of my left hand.
Nowhere in heaven or on earth would I find another person whose soul understood mine like this.
God, if you could really hear my birthday wish,
I wanted Fang Jindong.
I wanted only Fang Jindong.
