Huo Yanchuan clutched himself and let out a groundhog shriek.

“What are you trying to do?”

“I’m not turning this fake relationship into a real one!”

Looking at him suffering so bravely made me want to torment him even more. Especially with that shadow lurking in the gap at the door, spying on us.

I put on a heartbroken look.

“If it weren’t for you, I could be lying in his arms right now, kissing and sucking…”

“He knows how much I love a big, nurturing man.”

“Now you won’t even let me slap your chest a couple of times?”

“Weren’t you going to take good care of me for him?”

Shame and guilt made Huo Yanchuan stammer.

“Y-you two usually play like this?”

I shook my head.

He’d barely breathed a sigh of relief when I opened the drawer beside me. It was full of little toys to spice up a relationship.

“We play with these.”

I took out a collar and tried to slip it around his neck.

“He used to soothe me to sleep like this. Now no one does, and I can’t sleep.”

Huo Yanchuan rolled straight off the bed in alarm. He was red all over, too embarrassed even to look at me.

I sighed. “If you don’t want to soothe me, I’ll go find him.”

The shadow at the door immediately stirred.

Unfortunately for him, Huo Yanchuan put on the collar himself the very next moment and lunged forward to hug my legs.

“D-don’t go to him,” he begged miserably. “Please.”

“I’ll play for you. Is that enough?”

He was only afraid I’d tell Zhou Xinglan the baby was gone. Afraid his best friend would beat him to death.

I didn’t stand on ceremony. I planted a foot on his thigh.

“Kneel properly.”

He’d barely knelt, his face burning with humiliation, when Zhou Xinglan pushed the door open.

His expression was dark and deathly still.

With the leash between his teeth, Huo Yanchuan died right there on the spot.

Zhou Xinglan didn’t even glance at him. Holding up a children’s picture book, he declared with perfect righteousness, “Carry on. I’m just here for the baby’s prenatal story time.”

Prenatal story time couldn’t last forever.

This time, Huo Yanchuan locked the door the instant it was over. The dog leash still hung around his neck, and he looked at me with furious embarrassment.

I switched off the light and lay down to sleep.

His brain suddenly came back online. He ripped off the collar and threw it on the floor.

“You did that on purpose! You knew he was standing outside the door, didn’t you?”

I explained calmly, in a soft voice.

“I did it so your best friend would get over me sooner.”

“Once he gives up on me, you won’t have to put yourself through this act anymore. Isn’t that what you’ve wanted all along?”

Knowing he was in the wrong, Huo Yanchuan changed his tune in a second. He picked up the collar with an ingratiating smile and put it away.

“Ha ha. Actually, that little bell looks pretty good around my neck.”

He climbed into bed and started playing dead again. Worried I’d ask him to keep playing games with me, he decided to act the sleeping husband.

A little later, I asked softly, “Are you asleep?”

He lay rigid and motionless.

I poked his pecs, then his abs. Once I was satisfied he was really asleep, I curled my lips and deliberately whispered into his ear.

“There’s actually a secret I’ve kept for a long time. I only agreed to date Zhou Xinglan because I wanted to be closer to you.”

His eyelashes gave a sharp flutter.

I pretended not to notice and continued my heartfelt confession.

“When my feelings for you became impossible to control, I started keeping my distance. I avoided every occasion where I might see you.”

“You said you’d take responsibility for me until I found the person I wanted. But you’re the one I want.”

After a moment’s silence, I gave a bitter little smile.

“I’m not greedy. Even this is enough.”

My breath brushed intimately against his ear as I spoke. His breathing grew deep and quick, and his hand clenched without him realizing.

Watching the tips of his ears turn scarlet, I leaned in and kissed one gently.

“Good night,” I murmured, my voice tender and full of love.
