A Tattoo That Can't Be Removed - Chapter 3
The next morning, we acted as if nothing was amiss.
The only unusual thing was that I, who usually lingered in bed, woke up early, and he returned from his morning run without breakfast.
In a daze, he seemed to notice me, paused for a moment, and ruffled my hair.
“Why are you up so early?”
“Couldn’t sleep,” I replied, looking up at him.
He still carried the freshness of the morning dew, his gaze falling cleanly, earnestly watching me.
“What do you want to eat?”
“Noodles.”
“With an egg.”
Yes, everything seemed perfectly normal. He even pinched my cheek as he headed to the kitchen, yet I couldn’t understand the fear rising within me.
His phone vibrated continuously on the table.
I was about to call him, but when I saw the screen, I froze.
Though my memory isn’t particularly good, I was certain the number was the same as yesterday’s.
Perhaps to avoid the smell of cooking, the kitchen door was closed. I glanced at it a few times, then pressed to answer the call.
“Wei Yan, did you dare to hang up on me?”
The voice was sweet yet arrogant, and it caught me off guard instantly. The first impression Qin Chuchu gave me was exactly like that-high and mighty yet gracefully elegant-and it never changed.
“I’m his girlfriend,” I said into the phone, trying to make my voice sound as intimidating as possible.
“Huh?” came an exaggeratedly skeptical response.
“What kind of girlfriend are you to him?”
Then followed a string of bell-like laughter.
I could tell she genuinely looked down on me, truly believed she was above me.
“Haha, you say you’re his girlfriend, but do you even know that he and I…”
I didn’t hear the rest.
Because at some point, a hand reached from behind and pressed the phone off.
Wei Yan’s footsteps were always silent.
Another long silence ensued until he spoke, his voice low and hoarse.
“Heard anything?”
I didn’t know how to answer him, nor did I know what memories he shared with that woman.
But, as if possessed, I still spoke up.
“The tattoo on your neck, it’s her initials, isn’t it?”
He seemed to freeze entirely.
I didn’t want to see him lost in thought, because that meant he was recalling something, something that stirred his emotions.
He turned and walked towards the door.
“Where are you going?” I took a couple of steps to catch up.
I admit I panicked. It was strange; even though he treated me so well, I always felt like I was going to lose him one day.
The light outside the door slanted over him.
“I’m going to get it removed.”
His voice was deep and forlorn.
“You don’t like it.”
