Chapter 14
Chapter 14
One month later.
Lu Junrong’s business on the mainland had come to an end, and he was taking me back to Gangcheng.
Before we left, we went to a Cantonese teahouse for a meal.
He drank black tea and read the newspaper.
After finishing my shrimp dumplings, I made the most of my time to write a letter.
Lu Junrong glanced over sideways and asked lazily, “What are you writing?”
My pen flew across the paper. “A letter to my cousin in West City. I’m asking her to help look after my parents when she has the time.”
In reality, I was writing an anonymous report.
In the letter, I reported Shen Jincheng, a teacher at No. 1 High School, to the West City Bureau of Education for committing adultery with a female student. I stated that he was utterly devoid of morals and unfit to be a teacher.
Did they really think I would let them off that easily?
Not a chance.
I smiled faintly, feeling exceptionally refreshed.
Lu Junrong flipped a page of his newspaper and said mockingly, “You might have burned Bai Hezhi’s admission notice, but she can just take the university entrance exam again next year. I was wondering how you’d strike back, but is this it? I suppose this counts as a clean break with your husband.”
I answered vaguely, “Any ending that looks like a ‘clean break’ must have been preceded by countless heart-wrenching moments. By letting him go, I am also freeing myself.”
I wouldn’t tell Lu Junrong the truth.
I wouldn’t tell him how a woman can be dragged into an abyss by a life of poverty, a young child, and an irresponsible husband.
Nor would I mention that by the end of the year, Shen Jincheng’s mother would suffer a paralyzing stroke.
With the second Shen brother far away in Yunnan, Shen Jincheng was the eldest son. He loved to meddle and was obsessed with saving face, so the heavy burden of caring for his mother would fall entirely on his wife’s shoulders.
Of course.
The clever and selfish Bai Hezhi might even abandon her own daughter to flee that pit of fire immediately.
That was why I had to write this report.
I had to solidify the evidence of the affair between Shen Jincheng and Bai Hezhi, making their relationship public and binding them tightly together.
I wouldn’t give her a single chance to escape Shen Jincheng, and I certainly wouldn’t allow her to attend university.
Debts must be paid; it was as simple as that.
“It’s time to go.”
Lu Junrong folded his newspaper and put on his sunglasses. “Miss Xu, you should change your stage name. Your original name is a bit plain.”
I asked quickly, “Then… what would be a good name?”
Lu Junrong pondered for a moment. “Xu Zhiyi. From the poem: ‘How much of spring’s intent does one know?'”
“Alright.”
