Summary
Xu Yan is a poor, much-bullied scholar of Lanxi Town, pressed by his gambling debts to the local tyrant Huang San to uncover the truth behind the legend of the “Lanxi Water Ghost.”
After he falls into the river, he meets Liu Lang—a water ghost who has kept watch over the broken bridge for six hundred years.
Liu Lang is a lovesick spirit who drowned clutching a pillar while waiting for his lover Weisheng, and who has since been bound to that spot as an earthbound ghost; across the centuries he has silently fished each reincarnation of Xu Yan from the water.
When the Yingyu—a fabled fish whose appearance foretells flood—rises to the surface, Liu Lang spends his last strength to send a dream-warning to the whole town.
To repay him, Xu Yan willingly offers to take Liu Lang’s place as the water ghost.
But the broken bridge is swept away by the flood, and Liu Lang is about to dissipate with it.
All he leaves behind is one line: “These six hundred years—thank you for never once stopping your search for me.”
