Why Is My Ex Like This? - Chapter 6
And so began several wonderful months of our affair.
We went to our respective jobs by day. At night, we tumbled into bed together and indulged shamelessly.
Breathless, Lu Mingke asked, “Can I leave a hickey?”
I shook my head. “No. People will see.”
He wasn’t happy. Burying his face in my neck, he nipped at it and mumbled:
“Afraid your husband will see? I don’t mind you having a husband, but he minds you having me. Don’t you think he’s being petty?”
“No. My coworkers will see.”
“Then it matters even less.”
That weekend, Lu Mingke opened his door in sheer white fabric, the lines of his muscles showing faintly beneath it.
A very fine silver chain hung around his neck, its pendant swaying between his pecs.
I swallowed.
He scooped me up, pressed me onto the sofa, and we got up to all sorts of stumbling, fumbling mischief.
“Baby, you’re too thin. You’re so hungry it’s showing.”
“Your husband doesn’t treat you well at all.”
“Not even one ten-thousandth as well as I do.”
He pressed lightly on my lower belly. “Hungry?”
Thoroughly shaken up, I nodded. “A little.”
He got up, cupped my face, and kissed me.
“Wait here.”
Then he turned away and tied on an apron.
I looked up weakly and laughed.
“Idiot. Aren’t you going to put a shirt on first? Not worried about burning yourself a nice big blister on each side?”
He acted as though he hadn’t heard. Turning his head, he gave me a long, intent look.
It worked. I was seduced.
I went over quietly and wrapped my arms around him, teasing:
“Lu Mingke. You really don’t mind?”
“Mm. Your husband can accept raising someone else’s child. I can accept that you have a husband. As long as you like me a little more.”
“I like you best,” I mumbled.
Contented, he ruffled my hair.
“This place isn’t great. How about moving downtown?”
I blinked. “Huh?”
“I’ve checked. This place is far from both your workplace and your husband’s. Downtown would be closer. Move there. I’ve found you two an apartment. Much bigger than this.”
“…”
The kept lover was finding a home for the legitimate partner?
The natural order had officially flipped upside down.
Back home, I kept reading his post.
OP: [What do I do if she won’t agree to my suggestion to move? I can clearly give them a better life.]
By then, I was certain the poster was Lu Mingke.
Comment 1: [Hello? OP? Remember why you started this?]
Comment 2: [Holy shit. I look away for a few days and things have made new backward progress.]
Comment 3: [You’ve started supporting her whole family? A modern Teenage Mutant Ninja Doormat.]
OP: [The highest goodness is like water. More tolerance. More love.]
Comment 4: [Good lord, man. On behalf of my whole family: no, thank you.]
Comment 5: [Try drinking some talisman water.]
OP: [Stop insulting me. My plan is progressing steadily. She’s already starting to depend on me. Once she’s completely in love with me, I’ll dump her without mercy.]
A sour ache spread through my chest.
So he really was taking revenge on me?
All his kindness was just one part of the plan.
That night, my brother was eating dinner at home when someone knocked.
I opened the door.
Lu Mingke!
Surprised, I lowered my voice. “What are you doing here?”
Ignoring me, he walked in with sweet-and-sour ribs and greens. He greeted my brother politely.
“Mind if your junior joins you for dinner?”
My brother paused with his food for several seconds.
“…Sure.”
My dog son’s eyes lit up.
“Kept Lover! Master’s kept lover is here. Welcome!”
My brother’s CPU seemed to have fried.
Lu Mingke’s expression changed. He’d probably only intended to come over and provoke him. He hadn’t expected my dog son to announce his identity outright.
He sat down anyway, inwardly panicking.
“So… what dan are you in boxing?”
My brother looked puzzled. “Eighth dan.”
Lu Mingke nodded calmly. “Oh. Average.”
The three of us sat around the table.
A historical romance was playing on TV. The leads were saying a heartbreaking goodbye in the rain.
The hero shouted:
“Why didn’t you tell me? I could have given you a better life!”
My brother picked up a sweet-and-sour rib and offered his praise.
“This is good.”
Something seemed to strike Lu Mingke. He put down his chopsticks, his voice earnest.
“Actually, if you feel the burden’s too heavy, I could help you.”
My brother looked up. “Help with what?”
“Whatever you can’t give Song Mingxi, I can. Time. Energy. Money. I could even give Diandian better educational opportunities.”
On TV, the heroine cried:
“But he has already married me!”
The second male lead charged out and punched the hero.
“You wretch! How dare you covet my wife? Have you no shame?”
Lu Mingke froze.
“That’s not what I mean. I simply want to help you.”
My brother swallowed a mouthful of rice.
“Help? We don’t need any. We’re not exactly poor…”
The hero on TV cried out in anguish:
“I can wait, but beauty fades! One day, you’ll be old and withered!”
Lu Mingke said, “…I own seven properties. I can give—”
The second male lead snapped:
“Such arrogant lies! Who do you expect to fool?”
Under the table, I hooked my fingers around Lu Mingke’s hand.
His face was pale. He gripped a bank card, trying to decide whether to ask me to divorce my brother.
Diandian burst into tears in the bathroom.
I looked up. “What happened?”
Lu Mingke shot to his feet.
“I’m full. Enjoy the rest of your dinner.”
My brother picked up another rib, thoroughly baffled.
He remembered Lu Mingke being aloof.
Why was he so kind and enthusiastic now?
“Take care. Mingxi, go see him out.”
After seeing an uneasy Lu Mingke off, I came back to finish dinner.
My brother hesitated, then spoke.
“Mingxi. Don’t you think he’s a bit odd?”
“A bit,” I said.
“Oddly enthusiastic.”
“Maybe he’s in a good mood?”
Something occurred to my brother. His expression changed at once.
“He isn’t trying to get me into bed in exchange for favors, is he?!”
“?”
“…”
“There’s no chance of that.”
My brother grew agitated. “Why not?! That junior of mine was so aloof abroad. Never paid any attention to me. Recently, he’s been messaging all the time. Asking how I’m doing, whether raising a child is hard, if I’d like him to share the load, whether I want a job at his family’s medical company. Now he’s come right into our home! Didn’t you see? He was holding a bank card.”
He was falling apart. “That bastard. He sees a lonely divorced man and decides he can treat me like this.”
He was running out of strength. “Do you know he never went near women abroad? He’s gay. He’s gay!”
I sucked in a breath. “He really isn’t.”
But my brother had already lost his grip on reality. Muttering to himself, he wandered back to his room, devastated.
“Bro! It’s your turn to do the dishes today!” I shouted.
His door slammed shut.
The bastard. Playing dumb to get out of washing up.
