Who's Playing Who? - Chapter 9
Chapter 9
Lin Zhixia took a deep breath. Despite the frantic chaos surrounding her, her heart was incredibly calm. He Xingchuan stood to the side. Not far away, Zhou Qi’an had already been pinned down by security, his face contorted with rage. Her father’s gaze was vacant and flickering, unable to process everything happening at this moment.
“Gu Lan, do you really think your confession can save anyone?” Mother Lin’s voice betrayed a hint of despair-or perhaps it was anger; it no longer mattered. She took a step forward, her eyes full of threats, yet revealing an irredeemable arrogance. “What are you all doing? This is just my daughter’s foolish whim. She doesn’t know any better!”
“So you think it’s right to trade her future for your own profit?” Lin Zhixia shot back coldly. She gripped the microphone tightly, making herself appear steady and powerful amidst the endless accusations. “This time, I won’t let you control my life anymore.”
“You are an utterly unfilial daughter!” Mother Lin shrieked. Her voice was piercing, like a blade slicing through everyone present, as if she wanted to tear them apart completely. “How dare you betray me! After all the effort I’ve poured into you, you actually conspired with outsiders!”
Lin Zhixia looked her mother straight in the eye, refusing to back down. She felt the surrounding gazes like rockets, forcing her to respond. “What I needed was love, not to be used. I can make decisions for myself, while all you’ve ever wanted was control and profit.” Her tone grew increasingly firm, like a drawn bow ready to fire.
At that moment, He Xingchuan finally spoke, his tone devoid of emotion. “Everyone, what looks like a farce is actually a life-and-death struggle in the capital market. What I see in this family is a meticulously choreographed game.” As he spoke, he pulled a stack of documents from his pocket and pushed them forward coldly as evidence. “This is the Zhou Family’s bankruptcy reorganization plan, as well as the invalid agreement Mrs. Lin discussed with me. I hope you can understand that the truth isn’t about someone being ‘kept’ or ‘sponsored’; there is always a trail of evidence.”
Lin Zhixia didn’t pay attention to his words; instead, her eyes were fixed on Zhou Qi’an. He was pale now, his once-glamorous face completely submerged in fear. The Zhou Family’s predicament was like an invisible chain tightly gripping him. Seeing the distortion in his posture, she knew that this man essentially existed in the narrow gap between fear and greed.
He Xingchuan’s ruthlessness and decisiveness seemed to strike a nerve, tearing at everyone’s composure. “The one who started this game was you, not me.” He aimed his gaze at Mother Lin, his eyes resolute. “Using a daughter as a resource to trade for profit, only to sell her out without a second thought… the end result can only be internal family strife and the collapse of the mask. Who is right or wrong is meaningless.”
“Aren’t you afraid this will backfire on you?” Mother Lin sneered, attempting to maintain a final shred of dignity, even as the atmosphere grew more tense. Clearly, she realized everything was spiraling out of control.
Lin Zhixia stopped listening to her mother’s denunciations and turned her gaze toward He Xingchuan. His attitude felt like that invisible blade, cutting through a familiar yet unsettling shadow in her heart. Now that he had revealed his purpose before everyone, Mother Lin’s crimes could no longer be covered up.
“I am not afraid.” Lin Zhixia’s voice rang out again, hope igniting in her heart. As a former pawn who had been controlled, she understood that all of this had turned into an endless darkness, and she could no longer be anyone’s sacrifice. “I am like a fledgling wandering through the mist, where everything around me has lost its neutrality. I will step out of this door and find my own sunshine.”
The confrontation of gazes inevitably caused a wave of chattering. The audience was like a flock of startled birds, desperately trying to grasp any explanation. They stared intently at Mother Lin, seemingly waiting for an answer. Even her father took a deep breath, wanting to say something, but he found no words. The more silent it became, the more the panic in his heart seemed to overflow.
“Aren’t we just avoiding the unbearable truth from the beginning?” Lin Zhixia continued, her eyes filled with determination. “It was me, your daughter, whose future you traded for excessive possession. But from now on, I am no longer your bargaining chip.” She gradually raised her voice, creating a stark contrast with her surroundings. “I will show everyone the life I have defined for myself.”
The room fell into a dead silence as everyone yearned for a change. Mother Lin’s face grew increasingly pale, like a hollow shell crushed by the truth, eventually losing all its luster. Anger, loss of control, and despair intertwined, leaving her frozen and unable to argue further.
“I don’t want to be anyone’s pawn.” Lin Zhixia looked around, a long-lost courage suddenly surging in her heart and flowing through her veins. Although her father’s face was clouded, it was accompanied by an indescribable sense of expectation.
He Xingchuan offered a faint smile, a hint of approval showing through his cold expression. He watched everything silently from the side, seemingly signaling his support for Lin Zhixia’s decision. His presence wasn’t born out of mere self-interest; rather, he was using this chaos to help untangle the difficult fates hooked together, serving as a turning point for a cornered beast’s struggle.
“I have my own life.” Lin Zhixia shifted her gaze from He Xingchuan to Mother Lin, her voice low but firm. “Regardless of how you choose to face me, I will take control of my future, bit by bit. From this moment on, I will never again be that woman who is at everyone’s beck and call, disposable at any time.”
With this declaration, a clear sense of courage flowed through her heart like a rising river, striking a chord deep within her. She let go of all obsessions-no kneeling, no bowing her head.
“The ‘truth’ in your hearts was the cage of my life. I hereby announce that it is no longer the shackles constraining my existence, but rather the driving force for my struggle!” She began walking toward her seat, lifting her head to meet everyone’s eyes. Her mind was as clear as water, fearless and undaunted.
“Tonight, I am no longer wasting time as Mother Lin’s daughter, but standing as an independent, confident woman who thirsts for freedom, requiring no one else to decide my future.” Her voice was clear and resonant, no longer fearing any shadows of the past. The air seemed to solidify under her resolve, and everyone present was deeply touched by her words, as if hope had scattered like a vengeful light across this cold night.
But at that moment, a sudden interruption threw her persistence into jeopardy-Zhou Qi’an suddenly lunged forward like a cornered beast. In a desperate, life-risking move, he rushed at He Xingchuan, attempting to snatch the documents from his hands.
“What right do you have to interfere in our business!” he roared, his eyes bloodshot. A mix of despair and terror drove him to act with total reckless abandon.
In an instant, the crowd’s attention was drawn to the conflict; everything seemed to be spiraling out of control. He Xingchuan restrained him with ease, and security guards quickly stepped forward to help pin him to the ground.
Lin Zhixia seized the moment to step forward, exchanging a look with He Xingchuan. A momentary spark of chemistry flashed between them-this man, who helped her reveal the firm will hidden deep inside, seemed to be lighting a path forward for her at this very moment.
However, sighs and scoffs were heard incessantly, and the chaos added a sense of oppression to the growing silence. The waves in her heart gradually overflowed. Mother Lin’s gaze was venomous as she struggled to expose Lin Zhixia’s incompetence, as if trying to push the scene toward a further collapse.
“You’re all just jumping on the bandwagon to get a bargain,” she said spitefully, unable to hide her remaining guilt. With a desperate howl, she seemed intent on transferring all her misfortune onto Lin Zhixia. The entire banquet hall fell into a deathly silence; everyone held their breath, waiting for the next development.
“You don’t understand my heart at all,” Lin Zhixia said coldly, her mind already made up. Facing her mother’s accusations, she knew her choice was not an isolated one; it was a clear demarcation between them, a bold surge of fearlessness.
At that moment, He Xingchuan’s eyes met hers, filled with encouragement and determination. He stared straight ahead, his gaze cold and sharp. “Life is more than just interests, gains, and losses. It is about the conviction behind every decision.”
“The cold trials will eventually pass.” Lin Zhixia suddenly realized that the violent commotion around her was actually the trembling of souls and desires. Tonight would serve as a complete rupture between her and her past trepidation.
In this instant, soft feelings gradually revived in her heart, like sunlight piercing through heavy clouds to bring the warmth she craved from deep within. Everything before her eyes would no longer be an unreachable reality, but a true opportunity for the future.
“Your conflict will only accelerate your downfall. I will define my life here with confidence.” Her voice rose high once more, gradually shifting the entire situation. Joy and determination were completely ignited at that moment.
