Who's Playing Who? - Chapter 11
Chapter 11
Lin Zhixia sat at her desk in the studio, the sunlight streaming through the window and casting a touch of warmth over her. The contracts and documents on the desk were cold but clear, much like her current state of mind. She took a deep breath and looked toward He Xingchuan, who was busy at the neighboring desk. Memories of the determined look in his eyes when he first proposed this collaboration surfaced in her mind.
“Do you know what the focus of today’s work is?” He Xingchuan’s voice interrupted her thoughts, calm and direct.
“It’s… the market research report,” Lin Zhixia answered, her voice carrying a firmness she hadn’t possessed before. This was the first time she had faced a complex business task alone in such an environment. Even the smallest challenge filled her with immense excitement.
“Very good. Give me the data first; let’s see your analysis of the target market.” He Xingchuan nodded, signaling for her to pass over the documents she had ready.
Lin Zhixia quickly organized the materials and handed them over with a mix of nervousness and anticipation. He Xingchuan took them and flipped through the pages. His brow furrowed slightly for a moment before he settled back down and continued reading.
“Your logic is very clear, but you’re missing some key data comparisons,” He Xingchuan said, not hiding his thoughts as he delved into a deeper analysis. “For instance, user feedback regarding competitors. If you want a client to believe in your proposal, you must fully demonstrate your advantages.”
This wasn’t mere criticism; rather, it was guidance and an expression of his expectations for her. A wave of warmth rose in Lin Zhixia’s heart. She realized that He Xingchuan wasn’t simply “lecturing” her, but encouraging her to improve further.
“I understand. I’ll add that data in,” she responded, inwardly grateful for his corrections.
As time passed, the studio’s business gradually got on track. Although the projects weren’t large, they were full of challenges; every small success became a source of growing self-confidence for her. Under He Xingchuan’s guidance, she not only learned how to review contracts but also began to understand the complex interests behind them, gradually shedding her past submissiveness.
“Actually, you’ve already exceeded my expectations for you,” He Xingchuan’s voice was as cool as ever, yet it held a hint of affirmation.
“Thank you.” A smile spread across Lin Zhixia’s face. Hearing him say that was a rare treat, and it made her experience the joy of proving herself to others.
Under the pressure of this collaboration, the relationship between the two gradually shifted, transcending that of a simple superior and subordinate. He Xingchuan would sometimes tease her with his sharp tongue, yet he also kept an eye on her every move in subtle ways. Lin Zhixia often found it impossible to escape his sharp gaze, which seemed capable of seeing right through her inner turmoil.
“Zhixia, would you like to grab lunch together tomorrow?” He Xingchuan’s voice softened slightly, carrying the tone of an invitation.
“Sure.” Lin Zhixia’s eyebrows arched as she looked up to meet his gaze, seemingly sensing something. In that moment, her heart rate quickened. Her response to him wasn’t just a professional engagement; perhaps it also held a deeper sense of anticipation.
“You know, you act more mature than many adults. It’s rare,” He Xingchuan teased, his tone carrying a hint of ease. “But I hope you don’t get too clever. Clever people are always easy to take advantage of.”
“I’m not the person I used to be.” Lin Zhixia knew very well that she was no longer the girl who was easily manipulated by others. Now, the world moved according to her control.
“I know. I’ve seen the changes in you.” He Xingchuan looked at her with a complex gaze that seemed to hide endless depth.
As the studio grew quiet late at night, Lin Zhixia finished her work, but her mind remained restless. She thought about her relationship with He Xingchuan and this brief, subtle partnership. As time went on, she gradually felt He Xingchuan’s warmth and tenderness, and the position he occupied in her heart became increasingly clear.
That night, she fell asleep with a mixture of anticipation and curiosity. The discussions about business and He Xingchuan’s high regard for her future filled her with a surging sense of power.
At lunchtime the next day, the two met at a nearby restaurant. As Lin Zhixia walked in, she felt time inadvertently slow down; the noisy surroundings no longer distracted her. He Xingchuan was already waiting at the entrance. As usual, his face was indifferent, yet there was a faint smile at the corners of his eyes, seemingly acknowledging the growth of his “little partner.”
“I knew what your favorite food was, so I made sure to order it.” As soon as He Xingchuan spoke, his meticulous care became evident. His gaze was soft, showing he had carefully considered every detail.
“That’s a surprise. I didn’t expect you to remember,” Lin Zhixia responded softly, warmth instantly spreading through her heart.
During the meal, they shared snippets of their respective work lives. He Xingchuan would occasionally pose professional questions and listen to her perspectives. Gradually, the distance between them seemed to shrink. They were no longer merely superior and subordinate, but partners who relied on one another, facing the world together while gaining a deeper understanding of life’s different facets.
“There’s something I want to tell you,” He Xingchuan said, suddenly shifting the topic to look her directly in the eye. His natural earnestness made her heart race, and she grew tense in an instant.
“What is it?” She paused slightly, watching him with a touch of wariness. In that moment, she felt the weight of his words; curiosity and anticipation rippled through her heart.
“I’m very pleased with the changes in you lately, and it’s made me think a lot about the past.” He Xingchuan’s gaze didn’t waver, carrying a steady strength. “I think there could be more between us.”
“Are you saying… our relationship can move further?” Her voice was faint but clear, her heart a mix of trepidation and hope.
“I hope so,” He Xingchuan replied, his tone carrying a gravity she had never heard before.
Time seemed to stand still. Her world shifted abruptly with that single sentence. She felt this cold man opening a new door before her, yet she hesitated on the threshold.
“But… we’re partners. I don’t want to neglect our professional relationship,” Lin Zhixia said, trying to steady her emotions and avoid the tenderness underlying the conversation.
“I’m not asking to neglect it, but to let it grow upon the foundation of this partnership.” He Xingchuan smiled slightly, his eyes firm yet gentle. “I want to face the future with you, including our feelings.”
Her heart flared with heat for a second, only to be doused by a splash of cold water. Lin Zhixia didn’t know how to respond. She understood the weight of He Xingchuan’s words and sensed the expectations and challenges hidden within. What did this moment mean? And how should she choose?
“I think… I need some time to process this,” Lin Zhixia said slowly. Her voice was weak but firm, the turmoil in her heart difficult to put into words.
“Of course.” He Xingchuan didn’t push. Instead, he showed understanding and tolerance, as if he had already anticipated her reaction.
Lunch ended in a quiet atmosphere, though both were privately speculating about the other’s intentions. As they were parting, He Xingchuan said softly, “Zhixia, on the road ahead, remember that no matter what you choose, I will be here to support you.”
This promise was like morning light breaking through dark clouds, bringing a long-lost warmth to her heart. Lin Zhixia felt that He Xingchuan might become a significant presence in her future, helping her find her way through the fog.
Late one night, they were the only two left in the studio. Lin Zhixia finished her late work and tidied her desk. Just as she was about to turn off the lights, He Xingchuan’s voice came from behind her, carrying a low softness: “Want to grab some late-night snacks?”
She turned to see him silhouetted against the window. The moonlight traced the outline of his profile, adding a touch of mystery. Though his invitation sounded casual, she could sense a deeper level of care and expectation.
“Okay.” The corners of her mouth curled up slightly as the emotions surging within her finally became clear.
Tonight’s moonlight was just right-gentle and serene. Lin Zhixia finally felt herself moving in a brand-new direction. And this cold man might just become the most indispensable partner of her future, walking side by side with her.
