Chapter 20
When I woke up, the familiar scent of sandalwood was burning beside the couch.
I was in my room at the Lord’s mansion.
I sat up shakily, and the maid Xiao Ling, upon seeing me, hurried over.
“You’re awake! I’ll go tell the Third Prince!”
I hurriedly stopped her.
“Was the Lord-was the Lord angry?”
Xiao Ling stopped, tilted her head and frowned in thought, then said, “Angry? He did seem pretty angry.”
I thought, I’m doomed.
She continued, “That day he was furious, brought you back and called for a physician, kept watch by your bedside the whole night, and as soon as dawn broke, he took his men to find the Crown Princess.”
I was taken aback. “Went to see the Crown Princess?”
From Xiao Ling’s mouth, I learned the whole story.
I had been unconscious for three days.
That day, after I collapsed at the gate of the Ruiwang Mansion, the Lord brought Long Shuang and me into the mansion and summoned doctors to treat us through the night.
My Soft Armor had long been lost at the gate of the Pei Mansion, so the injuries this time were rather serious.
After all, the opponents were many, and not weak.
It was said that with the crimes I had committed, I should be sitting in the Imperial Prison by now.
Because I had killed someone and injured the current Second Prince.
However, His Majesty was gravely ill, and the Crown Princess was acting as Regent.
The Crown Princess was a person of both skill and talent.
Though the court had much to say about her identity, she never paid any heed, and even managed to stabilize the court situation in the time of His Majesty’s grave illness.
The Lord had just arrived at the Eastern Palace when Pei Su showed up right after.
He had read my letter, went to the Third Prince’s Mansion to find me and explain to the Lord, only to find nothing but an empty house, and then learned that I was seriously injured.
Before the Crown Princess could say anything, the two of them started a huge argument in the Eastern Palace.
Pei Su said, “Didn’t I make it clear to you last time? I gave you all the money I had, begging you to let Yu Sui go.”
The Lord cursed, “Stop acting crazy with me! The way you said it last time was like a tongue twister, who could make sense of it? How did I not let Yu Sui go? Did I tie her up or starve her? And that paltry sum of yours-stop embarrassing yourself! Does my Ruiwang Mansion need your measly handful of coins?”
“You mistreated her.”
“Nonsense!”
“You had Yu Sui seduce me! You never truly valued her! You’re not worthy of her devotion!”
The Lord was so furious he was about to explode: “Who-who told her to seduce you?!”
Pei Su was dumbfounded. “You didn’t tell her to seduce me?”
“Of course not!” The Lord braced himself on the carpet, feeling like he might faint at any moment. “I told her to keep an eye on you! I didn’t tell her to sleep with you!”
