When the World Went Silent, I Only Heard Her
The day the doctor ordered me into absolute vocal rest, Cheng Yanchuan stood by my hospital bed, his face as white as a sheet.
He stared at the gauze covering my throat, his eyes frighteningly bloodshot. It took him a long time to force out a single sentence: “Xu Zhixian, say something to me.”
I opened my mouth, but no sound came out. I could only reach for the notepad on the bedside table.
He seemed to spiral into a complete panic. His knuckles pressed against the bed rail, the veins on the back of his hands bulging from the strain of his restraint. “Just one word. Even if you’re cursing me. Just don’t let me hear nothing.”
Everyone thought he was cold, detached, and indifferent-like a machine that never broke down.
Only I knew that it wasn’t that he lacked emotion; it was simply that he couldn’t hear.
He couldn’t hear the joys and sorrows of others, nor could he hear the warmth of the world that resided within sound.
And my voice was the only thing with color in the gray world he had inhabited for twenty-seven years.
Yet, as fate would have it, the person who destroyed my voice was also him.
