Chapter 1
There weren’t enough dorm rooms on the day I registered for university, so I ended up in a room shared by students from different majors.
By sheer coincidence, one of my roommates was the star student from my high school. He and the other two were all majoring in electrical automation. I was the only computer science student.
“What a coincidence. Same school again.” I dragged my suitcase into the room, paused when I saw Jiang Suiye, then smiled at him. “And now we’re roommates, too.”
He had his back to me, making his bed. At the sound of my voice, he turned.
He was a little less than half a head taller than me, with handsome, well-proportioned features and a pronounced brow. He looked exactly like the male lead in a campus romance.
Plenty of girls had confessed to him in high school, but he was so aloof that I’d never heard of him being particularly close to anyone.
I went over to say hello. He nodded and took my quilt from me.
I stared at him, puzzled. He seemed perfectly at ease. He shook the quilt out, spread it across my bed, and started putting on the cover.
“I’m done with my bed. Thought I’d help you with yours.”
“Isn’t that a bit of a hassle?”
“No hassle. We’re roommates. It’s no trouble.”
As he spoke, he had already lined up the four corners of the quilt with the cover, his movements quick and neat.
I stood beside him, not quite knowing what to do with myself.
Was our star student actually this friendly?
Apparently, I’d had Jiang Suiye all wrong.
To be honest, we’d barely crossed paths in our three years of high school.
One of us sat in the front row, the other in the back, with half a classroom between us.
We stayed out of each other’s way.
All I knew was that his grades were excellent, he was handsome, and the girls chasing him could have formed a line from the teaching building to the school gate. Beyond that, nothing.
I’d never expected him to be so helpful.
You really couldn’t put too much stock in rumors.
“Then let me buy you dinner,” I offered.
“Sure. We’ve only just arrived, so we don’t know the campus yet. We can have a look around afterward.”
Jiang Suiye had a lovely smile. If those girls who were obsessed with him could have seen it, they’d have fallen even harder.
I wasn’t immune, either.
Who didn’t appreciate a good-looking guy?
When he brushed past me to put the quilt down, I caught a faint whiff of incense.
Something like agarwood, but with something else mixed in.
I couldn’t quite place it.
Whatever it was, he had good taste. His cologne smelled great.
I took a couple of deep sniffs, thinking he must be pretty particular about grooming.
There went another stereotype about the aloof school heartthrob.
I’d never guessed he liked wearing cologne.
Good for him. Much better than those guys who reeked of sweat and called it “a man’s scent.”
Our other two roommates arrived as well and introduced themselves to Jiang Suiye and me.
After dinner, he and I walked around campus.
“I never thought we’d get into the same university,” I said with a smile.
Honestly, his grades had been much better than mine.
I’d done unusually well on the college entrance exam, but even then, how had I managed to end up at the same school as him?
Jiang Suiye only smiled.
That night, I lay in bed.
Our heads were next to each other.
Only a railing separated our beds. I could hear him whenever he rolled over.
None of us had put up bed curtains yet, so all I had to do was lift my head to see his hair.
It looked very tempting to ruffle.
That faint scent drifted over again, hanging in the air like a thin mist. It slipped into my nose and mouth and somehow put me at ease.
I’d expected to have trouble sleeping in a new place. Instead, with that scent around me, I slept more soundly than I did at home.
