Vows in Vain, Ten Years, One Betrayal - Chapter 9
The driver dropped me off at the usual club and then left.
I went downstairs, and the car arranged by the teacher was already waiting at the street corner.
The car had a confidential license plate, one that ordinary people couldn’t trace.
Clutching the bag in my hand, I crossed the road and got into the car.
As the door closed, my phone started ringing.
The name flashing on the screen was Zhou Xuyan.
I didn’t hang up.
But deep down, I knew very clearly that this would be the last time I ever spoke to him.
“Darling… I don’t even have the face to say this to you.”
Zhou Xuyan’s voice was filled with remorse and guilt. “There’s an important social engagement tonight that I really can’t get out of.”
“I won’t be able to come home and have dinner with you.”
“But I promise, I’ll come back early tonight to be with you, okay?”
“Sweetheart, please don’t be mad. I’ve already asked Lin Yue to pick up the gift I ordered for you earlier.”
“You’re going to love it, I’m sure.”
I held the phone tightly, staring out at the endless stretch of street beyond the car window.
Amid the hustle and bustle of traffic, there was an emptiness, a quiet solitude.
That figure that had lingered in my heart for ten years.
The boy in the blue-and-white striped school uniform.
In that moment, he disappeared from my heart completely.
I knew, with absolute clarity, that I no longer loved him.
“Sweetheart, why aren’t you saying anything?”
On the other end of the line, Zhou Xuyan asked cautiously.
“Forget it, I’ll cancel. I won’t go. I’ll come home tonight and have dinner with you instead…”
“No need, it’s fine.”
I lowered my gaze, staring at the empty space on my ring finger.
“Go ahead and take care of your things. Zhenzhen and I have plans to have dinner tonight.”
“Then I’ll try to come back as early as I can, okay?”
“If it’s too late, just stay at the company. No need to rush back and forth.”
“No matter how late, I’ll come home.”
I didn’t say anything more. After a few more words, Zhou Xuyan hurriedly ended the call.
I put the phone back into my bag, and as the car gently jostled, I slowly closed my eyes.
