Vows in Vain, Ten Years, One Betrayal - Chapter 18
The day the divorce was finalized.
As we walked out of the Civil Affairs Bureau, Zhou Xuyan called out to me.
“Honey…”
His expression was dazed, his entire being devoid of vitality.
Those once passionate yet reckless eyes had long since lost their luster.
“Call me by my name.”
“Bihan.”
Zhou Xuyan stepped in front of me and stopped.
He gazed at me earnestly, and in those dim eyes, a faint glimmer of light seemed to rise again.
“We can still be friends, can’t we?”
“Just like ten years ago, starting as friends…”
I shook my head. “No, we can’t.”
“But Bihan…”
I cut him off resolutely. “Zhou Xuyan, I told you five years ago, forgiveness doesn’t exist in my life’s dictionary.”
“Back then, I compromised and took a step back.”
“And five years later, I’ve received my retribution.”
“Then let’s not be friends. Let’s start as strangers, alright?”
“Just give me one more chance, just this once, I swear…”
“Zhou Xuyan, don’t you know me by now?”
“In your eyes, the nothing special Lin Bihan is actually a stubborn soul..”
Zhou Xuyan suddenly looked at me. “You heard everything that night, didn’t you?”
I nodded lightly. “Yes, I heard it all.”
The last glimmer in his eyes shattered like ice cracking.
“But Bihan…”
“You took the pearl necklace you loved most and our wedding rings…”
“You still can’t let go of what we had…”
He looked like a drowning man, desperately clutching at the last straw to save himself.
But I shattered his final illusion.
“I burned them all in the jewelry workshop.”
“Zhou Xuyan, you can go search the sewers for that so-called old love.”
I didn’t say anything more to him and turned to walk away.
But Zhou Xuyan quickly caught up again. “You’re going to be with Chen Jingyao, aren’t you?”
“But all men in this world are the same, Bihan. He’s only interested because he hasn’t had you yet.”
“Once he does, he’ll make the same mistakes I did…”
“So what?”
I looked at him with calm eyes. “After having someone as terrible as you for an ex, what else do I have to lose?”
“Are you going to marry him?”
“I’ll think carefully about marriage, but I’m still young. I can have both the career I love and the man I like.”
“You like him?”
I looked at him and smiled. “What does that have to do with you?”
