Vows in Vain, Ten Years, One Betrayal - Chapter 14
I followed my teacher, heading straight to a small town in the northwest, thousands of miles away.
The conditions were rough, and the schedule was tight.
My teacher was always worried that my health wouldn’t be able to handle it.
But after enduring the initial discomfort, I gradually adapted to this fast-paced life and work.
I changed to a new phone and number.
But I kept the old phone on, and the number was not canceled; I just left it at my place and didn’t carry it with me.
Almost every day, there were calls and messages from Zhou Xuyan on the old phone.
But I never answered or read any of them.
After arriving in the northwest, I called Xu Zhen and briefly told her about what happened with Zhou Xuyan.
Xu Zhen was so angry that she cursed Zhou Xuyan on the phone for a full ten minutes.
“No wonder you ran off without a word.”
“Bihan, Zhou Xuyan has been looking for you like crazy these days, even came to the hospital to block me several times.”
“But I really don’t know where you went, so it’s useless for him to block me.”
“And he’s gone to other classmates too. Seems like he’s asked every classmate who’s close to you.”
I reminded Xu Zhen, “If he comes looking for you again, just say you don’t know anything.”
“I know, don’t worry, I won’t let him bother you.”
“It’s just, Bihan, will you come back?”
“Of course I will. I still have to go back and handle the divorce procedures with him.”
“What if he refuses to divorce?”
I laughed, “Doesn’t matter. I’ll be running all over the place from now on-he won’t be able to find me. We can just drag it out.”
“But the Zhou family definitely won’t agree. He’s their only son, after all.”
After the call, a few junior brothers and sisters came to ask me out for dinner.
Dinner was lamb hotpot again, the aroma mouthwatering.
Back in Jing City, because of my poor health, I was always very careful with my diet.
Beef and lamb were to be eaten sparingly, for fear of being over-nourished.
But now that I’m here, I follow local customs, and I seem to be getting more and more energetic.
My teacher laughed and teased, “You look much rosier these days.”
“Not like when I first saw you, when there was barely any color in your face.”
“Isn’t it just because I’m happy being with you, eating well and sleeping well?”
I held my bowl and leaned against my teacher’s shoulder, acting spoiled.
“How old are you now? Still acting like this in front of your juniors?”
My teacher pretended to scold me, but still picked up a big piece of meat and put it in my bowl. “Eat while it’s hot, have some more.”
I lowered my head and took a big bite of meat, but suddenly my nose stung.
I didn’t want my teacher to see me cry, so I finished the meat in my bowl along with my tears.
That night, after returning, the old phone kept vibrating.
Zhou Xuyan, for some unknown reason, called non-stop.
When things finally quieted down, I sent him the first and also the last message.
“The divorce agreement is ready. I’ll come back to handle the divorce procedures with you.”
“For anything else, don’t bother me again. Otherwise, I’ll permanently cancel this number.”
The moment I sent the message, Zhou Xuyan called again.
I still didn’t answer.
He didn’t call a second time.
It was only after a long while that he replied with a single word: “Okay.”
