To My Old Lover - Chapter 8
Chapter 8
The press conference was even more crowded than the engagement banquet.
The Lu-Song Cooperation Project was officially launching.
Media, shareholders, partners.
Profit was written on every face.
I was taken backstage.
Song Qiming’s secretary handed me a script.
“Miss Wen, read this exactly as it’s written.”
I scanned it.
It read:
Due to personal emotional entanglements, I intentionally intruded upon the Lu-Song Engagement Banquet, causing a negative impact.
I admit to persistently harassing Mr. Lu for a long time.
I apologize to Mr. Lu, Miss Song, and the elders of both families.
I will never appear before Mr. Lu again.
Every sentence was perfectly dignified.
So dignified it felt like they were shoving my face into the mud before wiping the corners of my mouth clean for me.
Song Qiming walked in.
“Miss Wen, it’s good to be sensible.”
I looked up.
“What about my brother?”
“The consultation will go smoothly.”
He smiled.
“Provided that you go smoothly as well.”
I stared at him.
“Was it you four years ago, too?”
Song Qiming’s expression didn’t flicker.
“Young people always love to overcomplicate simple things. You and Chenzhou were never from the same world to begin with.”
“So you decided for us?”
“We are simply returning things to their rightful place.”
Their rightful place.
I suddenly really wanted to ask him.
What about me?
What is my rightful place?
To be humiliated.
To be threatened.
To be pushed out as the scapegoat for a scandal.
And then to quietly roll out of their world.
I folded the script neatly.
“Rest assured, Mr. Song.”
“I will say exactly what needs to be said.”
He nodded with satisfaction.
Ten o’clock sharp.
I was invited onto the stage.
The camera flashes from the audience were blinding.
Lu Chenzhou was sitting in the front row.
The moment he saw me, he bolted upright.
Song Mingzhu pressed down on his arm.
It was a light touch.
But it made him stop.
She looked at me.
The meaning in that glance was crystal clear.
The knife had been handed to me.
Whether I dared to strike was up to me.
The host handed me the microphone.
“Miss Wen, regarding the disturbance at the engagement banquet, are you willing to make a public statement today?”
I took the microphone.
My palms were sweaty.
Yet my heart was strangely calm.
I looked at every lens in the audience.
“I am.”
The entire venue fell silent.
I unfolded the script.
“Due to personal emotional entanglements, I intentionally intruded upon the Lu-Song Engagement Banquet, causing a negative impact.”
Lu Chenzhou’s expression shifted instantly.
I continued reading.
“I admit to persistently harassing Mr. Lu for a long time.”
Some people in the audience wore expressions that said, “I knew it.”
Song Qiming stood at the side of the stage, a smile playing on his lips.
I paused for a moment.
Then, I lifted my head.
“The above is what Mr. Song wanted me to say.”
A deathly silence fell over the hall.
The smile on Song Qiming’s face froze.
I flipped the script over and held it up to the cameras.
“This is the apology script his secretary gave me.”
“Now, I will say what I have to say.”
