Chapter 2
Chapter 2
The whispers around us rose like a tide.
Song Mingzhu finally spoke.
“Chenzhou.”
Her voice was soft.
A reminder, but also a warning.
Lu Chenzhou let go of me.
But his eyes never left mine.
My aunt-in-law immediately seized the opportunity, her laughter growing louder.
“Don’t mind her, Young Master Lu. She’s been like this since she was a child-full of herself. She once thought she could marry into the Lu family, and when it didn’t happen, her temperament became even more bizarre.”
I looked at her.
“Auntie.”
She paused.
“Whose invitation did you use to get into this banquet today?” I asked.
Her expression shifted.
“What nonsense are you talking about?”
“I’d like to know as well.” I placed my wine glass back onto the tray. “I was originally assigned to the small banquet hall on the third floor. Half an hour ago, the manager suddenly transferred me here. And the moment I walked in, you just happened to spot me.”
My voice wasn’t loud.
But it was enough for the people nearby to hear clearly.
“Security for a Lu family engagement party is incredibly tight. Yet, a temporary worker can be reassigned on a whim, and a distant relative can just happen to corner me for a toast.”
I let out a small laugh.
“What a coincidence.”
The color drained from my aunt-in-law’s face.
People began to stare at her.
Others turned their gaze toward the Song family’s side.
Song Mingzhu’s father, Song Qiming, stood at the back of the crowd.
He was dressed in a charcoal-grey suit, holding a wine glass, his expression entirely unchanged.
It was as if he were watching a play that had been rehearsed long ago.
Lu Chenzhou looked over as well.
Song Qiming simply smiled.
“Miss Wen, those are some interesting words. Today is a joyous day for my daughter and Chenzhou. Your appearance has caused quite a scene; you make it sound as if someone is out to get you.”
The moment he spoke, the crowd fell silent.
The Song family had gained massive momentum in recent years.
On the surface, this alliance with the Lu family was a union of two powerhouses.
In reality, everyone knew the Lu family had been facing a capital chain crisis for the past two years.
The Song family’s money was the most beautiful piece of cloth covering the mess of debts Lu Chenzhou’s father had left behind.
I looked at Song Qiming.
“Mr. Song, you’ve misunderstood.”
“I’m not saying someone is out to get me.”
I paused.
“I’m asking: who is so afraid of my presence?”
As soon as the words left my mouth, Song Mingzhu suddenly looked up at me.
There was a hint of surprise in her eyes.
Not anger.
It was more like she had found a blade she also wanted to borrow.
My aunt-in-law grew desperate.
“Wen Qiao, don’t be ungrateful when you’re being shown a kindness. You’re just a server-do you really think you’re someone important?”
She reached out to shove me.
Lu Chenzhou stepped in front of me before she could.
“Don’t touch her.”
Three words.
Cold as ice.
My aunt-in-law froze.
The entire room froze with her.
Song Qiming’s smile finally faded a little.
“Chenzhou, there are many people watching today.”
Lu Chenzhou didn’t look back.
“Then let them watch.”
My heart gave a violent thud.
It wasn’t touched.
It was hate.
Were there no people watching four years ago?
Four years ago, his mother threw a check in front of me and told me that if I didn’t leave, my brother would be left to die.
There were people watching then, too.
The Lu family’s driver.
The Lu family’s butler.
The person in charge of hospital scheduling.
So many people were watching.
But Lu Chenzhou wasn’t there.
I stepped around him and picked up another glass of wine.
Thinking I was backing down, my aunt-in-law immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
“That’s more like it. Finish the toast and leave. Don’t bring your bad luck to everyone else.”
I walked up to her.
She blinked, stunned.
In the next second, I poured the glass of champagne over her head.
The golden liquid dripped down her meticulously styled hair.
She shrieked.
The room erupted into an uproar.
I placed the empty glass back on the tray.
“This toast is for you.”
“Thank you for teaching me. Someone who has endured for too long really does find it easy to be ‘ungrateful.'”
