Chapter 2
Yan Chen was a hot commodity.
Handsome, wealthy, pampered.
And the only son.
Having him meant having the most powerful family in Beijing.
So, he was never short of admirers.
Girls of every shape and style flocked to him like fish swimming upstream, but he never spared them a glance.
Except for me.
Because people are perverse.
They crave something different.
The first time he kissed me-
He looked like a man facing the gallows.
After the kiss, he even threw up.
I admit I wasn’t exactly dignified.
But I wasn’t that magnanimous either.
Especially when I scrolled through his Moments late at night and felt so miserable I wanted to cry.
He posted: “Feels like I just ate shit.”
My eyes were on the verge of flooding.
“Alipay [a payment platform; here refers to the notification sound or message of funds being received] transfer: 500,000 yuan.”
The tears were forced back.
This was my occupational injury compensation for being Yan Chen’s lapdog.
His mother hired people to watch over him and fend off would-be suitors.
I fought my way through and landed the job.
She said: “Ugly, and loves money like life itself-that’s exactly the person I need.”
Not a single word was pleasant to hear.
“Watch him. One hundred thousand a month. If your performance is good, I’ll raise it to five hundred thousand.”
That, I loved to hear.
Loved it to death.
That year, I was eight-a country bumpkin who’d just moved from a rural village in the northwest to Beijing.
