Chapter 16
All the way until the end of August.
Mrs. Yan’s people helped me get a new identity.
He asked if I wanted to change my name.
I shook my head.
“Let’s keep it as Lin Xinhua, the name my grandma gave me.”
In the days leading up to my departure.
Yan Chen was having trouble sleeping.
He would wake up in the middle of the night.
Come to my room and wake me up.
“What’s wrong?”
He squatted by the bed and asked, “When you go to Jing University, will you stay in the dormitory?”
I made up a story: “Yes, I want to make friends. I’ve never experienced dorm life before.”
His tone relaxed a bit.
“Pack your things, bring your documents, and when school starts, take my car. I’ll rent a place outside, and occasionally you can come over.”
I was half-asleep and confused.
I reached out to hug him, “Yan Chen, I love you so much, you’re so good to me…”
He sounded disdainful, “It’s nothing, don’t get too excited, you little bumpkin. Where are you touching? Let go of me, are you really awake?”
After a long pause, he spoke, coaxing.
“…Want some cherries?”
I was too tired.
I didn’t sleep particularly well every night.
He leaned back on the sofa, lazily.
The next day, I packed my things.
Yan Chen tore off his gentle facade, smirking wickedly, “Would you fall in love with your silicone toy?”
I heard in the group chat that Song Minxin was returning to the country for a while.
At the dining table, he kept piling food onto my plate.
I covered my bowl with my hand.
“That’s enough, that’s enough.”
He was too happy.
After a couple of bites.
Yan Chen said again, “Tomorrow is a good day.”
I nodded.
Tomorrow, Song Minxin returns to the country.
He couldn’t suppress the smile on his lips, “It’s a secret for now.”
“I know.”
Everyone knows, okay.
In the afternoon, those young masters and misses from Beijing gathered for an event.
He took me along.
I was on the second floor eating.
They were having a small gathering on the third floor.
I thought about saying goodbye to Yan Chen.
And wished him and Song Minxin a swift resolution.
But when I went up, I heard them talking about me.
Someone sounded worried, “Dude, you’re not actually falling for the housemaid’s daughter, are you?”
He leaned back on the sofa, lazily.
“No.”
The son of the Shen family sneered.
“I doubt it. Last time, during such heavy rain, you drove us down the mountain… If Mrs. Yan finds out, she definitely…”
Yan Chen tore off his gentle facade, smirking wickedly, “Would you fall in love with your silicone toy?”
A burst of laughter erupted.
I looked down at the egg tart on my plate.
Angrily picked it up and took two bites.
Imagining it was Yan Chen.
“I’ll bite you to death, I’ll bite you to death!”
I won’t say goodbye to him.
That night, I followed Mrs. Yan’s arrangements and left the country, disappearing.
I heard they staged a fake car accident.
Some of my personal belongings were in the car.
Upon landing in a foreign country, my phone was bombarded with messages.
The news of Beijing’s trust-fund prince sacrificing himself for love shot to the top of the trending list.
There were a few photos from the car accident scene, showing him trying to rush over, held back by bodyguards.
He looked heartbroken, utterly desolate.
I narcissistically told my only informed friend:
“Yan Chen must like me too, right?”
She shattered my fantasy.
“He didn’t attempt suicide because you died.”
“Song Minxin was forced into an arranged marriage by her family, and Yan Chen cut his wrist to resist Mrs. Yan, saving Song Minxin.”
I awkwardly laughed.
Looking again, those news articles were gone.
Replaced by news of Yan Chen’s engagement to the Shen family’s eldest daughter.
My friend added, “He compromised for Song Minxin, marrying into the Shen family.”
The Yan and Shen families are the true dragons in the pond.
The Song Family can only stand aside.
As far as I know, Mrs. Yan strongly opposed his relationship with Song Minxin.
But for me.
The mountains are high, the waters long, the future is promising.
I adjusted my mood, studied the major I wanted, and enjoyed life.
Six years later, I was sent back to China by the company to work in the domestic market.
But unexpectedly.
Under the starry sky inside the car, the person behind me held me tightly.
“Lock you up forever, so you can’t run away, right?”
“…Baby, that summer, I should have made sure you couldn’t run away…”
I drank too much, feeling dizzy.
I could sense it was Yan Chen.
But I had no strength.
Soon, I fell asleep.
