The Villain Is a Chatterbox, and I'm Mute - chapter 7
On New Year’s Eve, the convenience store was especially quiet.
I was the only one on duty.
After finishing a set of practice papers, it was already eleven o’clock at night.
Qin Xu had said I should keep in touch with him during winter break, but I hadn’t called even once.
In another hour, it would be the New Year…
Snow began to fall outside, and the distant sounds of fireworks and firecrackers drifted in.
Warming my hands, I dialed the number.
“Who are you looking for?” The call connected, and a gentle female voice came through.
My heart tightened, and I stammered, “Hello, I’m looking for Qin Xu.”
“Mom, why are you using my phone?” Qin Xu’s voice grew clearer as he approached.
“Who is it?” He took the phone. “Why aren’t you saying anything?”
I pressed my pounding heart, unable to understand why I was so nervous.
“Is this Shen Qing?”
“Mm,” I replied softly.
Qin Xu let out a cold laugh: “Didn’t take your medicine properly? Can’t speak again? Half the winter break is gone and you only now think to call me?”
Three questions in a row.
I mumbled, “I’ve been taking my medicine on time. Sorry.”
“If ‘sorry’ worked, why would we need the police?”
I was about to apologize again when Qin Xu suddenly cried out: “Mom, why are you pinching me!”
“Speak gently to girls.” A lowered female voice came from the other end.
So his mom had been there all along.
Blushing, I hurriedly said, “Happy New Year, Qin Xu, and Auntie.”
Then I quickly hung up.
Covering my burning face, I buried my head in my arms, but an inexplicable happiness welled up inside me.
With a burst of energy, I finished another set of papers.
When I was done, a customer in a black coat appeared before me.
I quickly stood up and grabbed the barcode scanner.
“Hello, would you like to check out?”
“No.”
The boy’s voice was clear and cool: “I came to wish you a Happy New Year.”
Just then, the clock struck twelve.
Fireworks bloomed outside the window.
I looked up abruptly and met Qin Xu’s sparkling eyes.
Stunned, I asked a silly question: “Am I dreaming?”
Qin Xu pressed his cold hand to my cheek: “Guess?”
I smiled.
“It’s not a dream.”
