Chapter 25
I downed three shots at the bar.
Jiang Yu’s strong perfume gave me a headache.
When she leaned in to feed me cherries, I suddenly remembered how Lu Tong looked every time she sliced fruit at home.
I pushed Jiang Yu away.
Staggered back home.
As I got home, my phone flashed a special notification.
Lu Tong had updated her cycling account with a new video.
She stood at the edge of a cliff, arms outstretched, while Cheng Yu’s camera followed her every move.
The caption was in French.
I copied it and looked up the translation to understand its meaning.
The cracks in my soul are where the light gets in.
Ha.
I casually threw the glass of water beside me onto the floor.
Zhao Cai, who used to dart away at the slightest noise, was nowhere to be seen.
I walked to the balcony.
All that was left was the cat tree Lu Tong and I had assembled together.
The cat bowl, litter box, cat food, even the cat wardrobe Lu Tong made for Zhao Cai and the dresses she bought were all gone.
I cursed under my breath and called Lu Tong directly.
She didn’t answer.
My stomach churned, burning hotter, and I rushed to the bathroom to vomit.
I hadn’t eaten much all day, but I’d drunk quite a bit.
Jiang Yu never cared about these things.
Lu Tong used to hate it when I drank.
But every time I came back from a social event, no matter how late, she’d get out of bed to make me a hangover soup.
When Lu Tong’s call finally connected.
I was leaning against the sink, gasping for breath.
“I sent you my location.”
“Tomorrow we’ll discuss the divorce, and bring your lawyer too.”
