Chapter 2
Even with his face blurred, I recognized him immediately.
The man in the photo was my ex-boyfriend, Jiang An.
The poster gradually supplied more details. Before they were married, he had bought her a house, a car, and more jewelry than she could count. On holidays and anniversaries, he sent her large sums of money.
For her, a man who couldn’t cook had become an excellent cook. He had even built her a private system for ordering whatever dishes she wanted.
He remembered her period more reliably than she did and fussed over her every time. When she was upset, he found ways to cheer her up, talked her through her feelings, and offered advice.
He told her that as long as he was there, she would always have someone to catch her.
“I’m so scared!”
“Aren’t the things you’re scared of supposed to happen to you? Then where is he?”
“A daddy with a boyish face. Let me date one before I die. Please, before I die.”
“Don’t try to achieve immortality that way.”
In this story, one sincere heart had been betrayed, then healed by another. At last, the two of them had found their way to each other.
I was the disposable ex-girlfriend in their love story.
Mixed in with all the blessings were plenty of attacks on me. Before the prince and princess could live happily ever after, they had to overcome great hardships and slay a dragon.
I was the dragon.
“I’m crying. This is such a perfect love story. He remembers every little thing about her.”
“Is nobody going to talk about the ex? Do women really dump men just because they’re poor?”
“I wonder if she regrets it. A devoted, wealthy man like that is almost impossible to find.”
“She won’t regret anything. Gold diggers just move straight on to the next target.”
“She’s probably with some old man for his money right now. Women like that will do anything for cash.”
As the rumors about me grew wilder, the poster did nothing to stop them. Instead, she selected one to answer.
“I’ve vaguely heard she’s with someone else. Quite a bit older, apparently. No idea if he’s rich, though. Let’s not talk about that!”
Her breezy tone only made the claim seem more credible: I had abandoned Jiang An for a rich old man.
I was so angry I kicked the man beside me awake.
“You’re still asleep? Someone just called you an old man!”
