Chapter 1
A topic was trending online:
#OurFirstPhotoTogether#
One post had racked up a huge number of likes.
“To get a photo with him, I took one with every senior student graduating that year.”
“I didn’t dare get too close.”
“Only after I found out his girlfriend had dumped him for being poor did I dare start talking to him.”
“Now we’re married. He landed a high-paying job, and the house and car are both in my name.”
The photo was blurry, but you could still tell they were a good-looking couple.
The comments were full of people swooning over how sweet they were. Others gleefully wondered whether his ex regretted it now.
Someone agreed: a gold digger like that had probably ended up with some rich old man.
Furious, I kicked the man sleeping beside me.
“You’re still asleep? Someone just called you an old man!”
……
Late one night, I came across a trending topic.
#OurFirstPhotoTogether#
People were sharing the first photos they had taken with their partners and telling their love stories. I was thoroughly enjoying myself.
Then one post with a lot of likes caught my eye. A young woman was telling her story.
“He was a senior labmate of mine. Tall, handsome, meticulous about his work. Our advisor’s star student, with plenty of research publications.”
“I fell for him the moment I saw him. But I was so ordinary. There was nothing special about me.”
“On his graduation day, I took photos with every graduating senior, just so it would seem natural to take one with him.”
The attached photo had their faces blurred. Even so, you could tell they were both attractive.
People in the comments kept asking what happened next. She picked one to answer.
“We’re married now. He got a really high-paying job. The house and car he bought are both in my name.”
Everyone was swooning and begging for more details, so she added another part.
“Back then, I didn’t even know he had a girlfriend. I certainly didn’t know she would abandon him later.”
“I suppose I should thank her. She made my dream come true.”
The comments exploded. People condemned the gold-digging ex while celebrating the poster and her boyfriend’s perfect love.
I read them and gave a short laugh.
That gold-digging ex-girlfriend was me.
