The Identity Game - Chapter 10
Damn it! What goes around comes around, all my previous anger was in vain, all my actions were for nothing!
“What about Chen Panqing?” I asked, laughing in exasperation.
“You don’t need to worry about that. I’ll find a time to explain everything to her, and give her a breakup fee…” Shao Rubai said lightly.
“Let go!” He forced me to swear. “I never seduced you! On the contrary, I despise you!”
Shao Rubai’s pride was wounded. He immediately let go of my hand, his face sinking, and told me to get out of the car. I closed the door, watching the car speed away as angrily as its owner. I waved goodbye to Shao Rubai for the last time.
Goodbye, Shao Rubai. May we both be well, owing each other nothing.
On my last day at the company, I completed the procedures and packed my belongings. My colleagues wanted to hold a farewell party, but I politely declined. I walked past Shao Rubai’s office door, carrying a cardboard box, when my phone rang.
With one arm holding the box, I struggled to pull my phone from my bag. Seeing the caller ID, it was Shi Song.
“Hello?” I tilted my head, wedging the phone between my cheek and shoulder.
“Lin Nanlu,” Shi Song’s voice sounded a bit tense, “Yesterday, Rubai crashed his car into a tree. He…”
Shao Rubai, who had just walked out of his office, easily took the phone from my neck. “I have an important announcement to make. The call can wait.” Shao Rubai, with a bandage around his head, a pale face, and cold eyes, took my phone without a word and walked away. I stood there, at a loss.
Shao Rubai called all the staff together. Colleagues gathered one by one. Chen Panqing walked past me and softly said, “Why haven’t you left yet?”
“I have an important announcement to make now,” Shao Rubai said to the assembled crowd.
As a terminated employee, I stood in the aisle, not knowing whether to leave or stay. I could only place my box on the ground, intending to get my phone back after Shao Rubai finished speaking.
After saying that, Shao Rubai walked towards me. I eagerly extended my hand, ready to receive my phone. To my astonishment, Shao Rubai took my hand and said to everyone, “My girlfriend, Lin-Nan-lu, I’m going to marry her.”
Me: “!!!”
Shao Rubai pulled a diamond ring from his pocket and said to me in a cheerful tone, “Isn’t it a coincidence? Last night, I received a call from a jewelry designer. He asked me why I hadn’t picked up the custom engagement ring yet…”
“That designer must have made a mistake. How could I possibly be…” I was still trying to cover it up, but Shao Rubai forcefully interrupted me.
“I asked the designer who the engagement ring was for, was it Chen Panqing? The designer laughed at how quickly I changed partners, but unfortunately, they had already engraved Miss Lin Nanlu’s initials on the ring and couldn’t change it.”
I was speechless, but Shao Rubai opened up.
“I was so excited that I drove right into a tree. Thankfully, I didn’t lose my memory again this time.”
Shao Rubai, in front of everyone, slipped the ring onto my ring finger, his voice almost joyous. “See? Neither I nor the designer made a mistake. It fits perfectly, according to your finger size.” Shao Rubai then put a ring engraved with his initials onto my index finger. The gossiping colleagues immediately erupted in excited cheers, as if they were the ones getting engaged, completely drowning out my resistance and struggles.
