Chapter 2
By the time Leo finished his meeting and came out, I had already eaten, cleaned up the kitchen, and was sitting in the living room watching a drama.
As if nothing had happened.
He turned to take a shower and realized halfway through that there were no towels. Instinctively, he called out to me from the bathroom.
“Honey, where’s my towel?”
I didn’t turn around. “It’s already packed in the box. If you don’t mind, you can use mine for now, and I’ll throw it away later.”
The response was a long silence.
When Leo came out, he noticed three boxes placed by the entrance.
He sat down opposite me and pushed the divorce agreement across the table with his fingertips.
“I can give 15 million for child support upfront, and the rest on a monthly basis…”
I interrupted, “No need, let’s settle it all at once.
“I don’t think she would want you to contact me again.”
Leo’s eyes showed confusion. “The child isn’t just yours; I have the right to be involved in his upbringing.
“I know this is my fault, and I’m willing to compensate, but you don’t need to use the child as leverage.”
I paused the drama and looked at Leo seriously.
“Cheating is your fault, and it’s reasonable for you to compensate and pay child support. Compared to your assets, taking the house and car isn’t much.
“Our son has been raised by me since he was little. He’s a sensitive child with needs. How much energy can you spare for him amidst your passionate affair?
“Being involved in his upbringing isn’t just about money; it’s about time and companionship.”
Leo was rendered speechless and finally spoke after a while, “Anyway, I won’t spend 20 million to sever my relationship with our son.”
I reached out and flipped open the divorce agreement. “20 million is for compensation and child support. If you have other emotional needs, you can transfer money to our son, and I’ll open a separate account for him.”
Leo suddenly laughed. “Sophia, I never knew you loved money so much. All you talk about is money.”
“What else? Does loving you help?”
Leo was left speechless again, his face stern as he swiftly signed the divorce agreement.
He also arranged for us to go to the civil affairs bureau tomorrow to apply for a divorce.
Then he called the driver.
After finishing the drama, I went to sleep.
In the morning, Leo was already gone.
Our son ran out of his room and hugged me, excitedly telling me about a particularly happy dream he had last night.
Listening to his sharing, I cautiously told him that Daddy’s company was busy and he might be on a long business trip.
Unlike his usual self, he didn’t insist on calling Leo to ask, “Daddy, when are you coming back?”
He simply said “Oh,” pursed his little lips, and added, “It’s okay, as long as I have Mommy with me.”
I couldn’t hold back any longer, tears welled up, and I excused myself to the bathroom to compose myself.
Agreeing to divorce Leo, aside from sadness, the greatest feeling was guilt towards our son for not being able to let him grow up in a complete family.
But I knew this guilt wasn’t caused by me.
After dropping our son off at school in the morning, Leo and I went to the civil affairs bureau to apply. There’s a 30-day cooling-off period, after which we can get the divorce certificate.
Back in the car, I marked the date on the calendar.
30 days until the divorce countdown.
