Chapter 1
After twelve years of marriage, my millionaire husband fell in love with the new receptionist at his company.
She is nearly forty, not as pretty as I am, nor does she have a better figure, yet in just half a year, she provided my husband with immense spiritual value.
Leo said to me wearily:
“If we divorce, you can have the house and the car. Sophia, can you let me go?”
I calmly replied, “Alright.”
Then I bought a calendar and drew a circle on it.
Divorce countdown, 30 days.
When I pushed the divorce agreement in front of Leo, it had only been 40 minutes since he told me about his affair and our impending divorce.
As per the agreement, the house, car, and child would all belong to me.
He would give me a one-time payment of 20 million as compensation and child support.
Afterwards, the child and I would no longer disturb him.
At that moment, Leo was in a phone meeting. When he glanced down and saw the words “divorce agreement,” his expression changed imperceptibly.
He nodded slightly, indicating he understood.
I left the room.
To save both of us time, I packed all of Leo’s clothes and belongings.
Three full suitcases, and to avoid missing anything, I even included his childhood photos from the attic.
Finally, I noticed the wedding photo in the corner.
In the photo, Leo’s features were handsome, and I was smiling sweetly, embracing him under the sun without a care.
That was when he would always hold me and whisper, “Honey, I love you so much.
“So lucky to have married you.”
Leo and I met in college; when he first knew me, he was still a poor boy wearing worn-out canvas shoes.
Back then, many pursued me, but I fell for Leo at first sight.
He was calm, kind, and good-looking.
He had countless virtues.
After graduation, we naturally got married, and he started a company with friends.
After getting pregnant, I became a full-time housewife.
I devoted myself to taking care of Leo, our family, and our child.
As the business grew, Leo’s social engagements increased.
In the midst of busy and trivial life, I found time to exercise, learn makeup, and dress up.
Leo never disappointed; no matter how busy, he would come home to take care of the child and cook.
He helped me manage the relationship with my in-laws.
In the eyes of outsiders, we were the model couple, the model husband and wife.
I don’t know when it started, but Leo moved his meetings to the evening.
Sometimes he was so busy that he wouldn’t come home all night.
Friends joked with me, telling me to keep an eye out for trouble.
I said it wouldn’t happen, but my heart was still uneasy.
I delivered midnight snacks to Leo and his colleagues a few times.
There was nothing unusual, just a group of people having a meeting, with that woman waiting at the front desk.
Her name was Jane, in her forties, not tall, slim build, short hair, unremarkable appearance, but her voice had a gentleness that contrasted with her looks.
She greeted me with a smile.
Over the years, I had imagined this day.
I thought it might be a pretty secretary, or a spirited college student, or perhaps a decisive female boss.
But I never considered her at the front desk.
I heard she had been married once, and her husband cheated, leading to divorce.
This was her first job after the divorce, and she cherished it dearly.
She would arrive early at the company, note everyone’s little habits, and occasionally make some pastries.
Some colleagues even ordered lunch from her for convenience.
When I found out, I told Leo she was having a hard time and asked him to look after her.
Leo always responded indifferently.
“The company isn’t a place for sentiment; I’ve already advised against transactions beyond work.”
Back then, I joked that Leo was a heartless boss.
Now, thinking back, perhaps he felt sorry for Jane having to work and then make takeout for colleagues.
As for why Leo chose today to ask for a divorce.
It was simply because I made him a bowl of hangover soup as usual after he woke up with a hangover.
He looked at the soup in front of him, sighed, pushed it slightly away, and remained silent for a long time.
Suddenly, he looked up at me, his eyes weary, and asked if we could divorce.
He confessed that he had been having an affair for half a year, and every time he worked overtime, he would take time to rent a room.
My heart shook like a sieve, and I tried hard to control myself from losing it.
I asked who it was.
When he said Jane, I even doubted my hearing.
A sense of helplessness swept through my body.
Cold and chilling.
