chapter 14
On the eve of the Birthday Banquet, Cheng Song somehow found out where I was and came to block my way.
“Lingyue, you invited me to your birthday. You still care about me, don’t you?” He rushed over anxiously, his eyes burning with twin flames. “I know you’re avoiding me because you’re jealous. I’ve already cut off contact with Su Wantang. I’ll never do that again. Can we just be together and live a good life?”
I let out a mocking laugh.
“Cheng Song,” I said, “I thought you’d learned your lesson by now.”
He murmured, “I really know I was wrong. It was Su Wantang, she deliberately seduced me, but nothing actually happened between us. Lingyue, believe me, I’m still clean.”
He looked nothing like the arrogant Young Master Cheng of the past.
“I know nothing happened between you two,” I replied, my tone odd. “If something had, you wouldn’t be standing here now.”
Cheng Song clearly didn’t understand what I meant.
He just relaxed a little, gazing at me longingly, and began to pour out his feelings: “Lingyue, I’ve always loved you. I was just blinded by what others said. I didn’t want them to call me a useless man living off a woman, so I deliberately distanced myself from you. But now I realize none of that matters. As long as we love each other, what outsiders think is completely irrelevant.”
“But they weren’t wrong.” I yawned, my tone lazy. “You really are a useless man living off a woman.”
Cheng Song stiffened slightly, but he had grown up a bit.
He actually bowed his head to me and said, “I know, but I’ll rely on myself from now on and give you a good life.”
I found it odd. “I’ve always had a good life.”
Relying on someone else might just downgrade my life.
Was he cursing me?
Cheng Song was at a loss for words.
He looked at my expression, hesitated, and said, “Your male companion…”
I narrowed my eyes at him.
He backed down, probably afraid he wouldn’t even get into my Birthday Banquet, so he lowered his head.
“I won’t mind. After all, I owe you that much.”
He tried to sound casual, but there was a hint of sorrow.
I couldn’t be bothered with him.
If I insult him, he’ll disgust me; if I hit him, it doesn’t seem to work either-he’s been hit several times and still clings on relentlessly.
I never thought I’d been that good to him.
Looking back now, maybe I was too good, which is why he’s stuck to me like a piece of gum.
I never regretted anything I did before, letting him climb up. Now, I regret it a little.
Uncle Chen pushed me away, and I suddenly asked, “If the Cheng Family can’t even manage their own people, can they really do business well?”
He couldn’t have found out my whereabouts on his own; it must have been the Cheng Family who asked around.
After all, I’ve been so cold lately, and this Birthday Banquet has a bit of a trap to it. It’s normal for the Cheng Family to feel uneasy.
Honestly, everyone can probably guess I’m about to break off the engagement, but Cheng Song seems to be living in his own world, and the Cheng Family indulges him-maybe holding onto their last bit of hope.
But what does that have to do with me? If they bother me, they deserve punishment.
Uncle Chen followed my lead: “The project they’re bidding for recently, the person in charge asked President He for her opinion.”
I replied with a simple “Mm.” “Then just tell them, after tomorrow night, the Cheng Family and the He Family will have nothing to do with each other.”
