Take Me Away, My Love - Chapter 28 - Warning
When Li Minchun emerged from the toilet, she found Gu Xing standing at the door, staring at her.
Never before had Li Minchun been so afraid of Gu Xing’s gaze. This man seemed to possess the ability to see through one’s soul, making Li Minchun feel momentarily at a loss.
“What are you looking at?” Li Minchun tried to remain calm, hoping to steady her mood to avoid revealing any weakness.
However, Gu Xing’s gaze did not waver. Like an eagle, his piercing eyes fixated on Li Minchun, as if trying to scrape off a piece of her.
This feeling made Li Minchun uncomfortable.
So, she turned away, ignored him, picked up her bag, and prepared to leave.
Finally, Gu Xing, who had been like a statue, followed her and coldly said, “Whether you are Li Minchun or not, regardless of your intentions with Jian Yiqing and Jian Qingtian, let me give you one piece of advice. Not everyone is a fool, so you’d better make the right decision.”
Li Minchun narrowed her eyes at Gu Xing and asked, “Are you warning me?”
“Yes, I am warning you. This is merely verbal, but if you step out of line again, I can’t guarantee what I’ll do next.”
The threat amused Li Minchun, and she couldn’t help but laugh.
“You are quite interesting.”
Gu Xing seemed unconcerned with her remark and simply walked ahead, leading her to the car. He respectfully opened the door and said, “Please, get in.”
A faint smile appeared at the corners of Li Minchun’s mouth as she took the front passenger seat.
After this exchange, neither of them spoke another word.
The atmosphere during the drive was tense. Gu Xing was naturally not a talkative person, and Li Minchun was wary of revealing too much and exposing her secrets.
“There it is, just ahead,” Li Minchun pointed out.
After dropping her off, Gu Xing watched her as she was about to enter and repeated, “Know your place.” With these words, Gu Xing drove away.
Standing at the entrance, Li Minchun watched his receding figure, a slight smile playing on her lips. Gu Xing was still as charming as ever.
Since she had taken over the position of Qingmu Leader, Li Minchun had to fulfill her duties.
The next morning, she arrived at the company early to check on the businesses under her control.
The real estate department she initially applied to was naturally within her jurisdiction. Yet, in just over a year, the once-novice had unknowingly become the leader.
This transition left Ma Yunfei, who had first met her, a bit off-balance.
Today, as Li Minchun approached the office door, she overheard Ma Yunfei complaining, “I think that Su Xin is useless, just pretty and with a good figure-that’s why she climbed to her position. Darling, help me get promoted too. It’s frustrating to watch a rookie climb above me.”
“When you were at the same level, I already told you, but you never listened…”
“Darling, use whatever means necessary, just get me to the vice leader’s position…”
Overhearing Ma Yunfei’s phone call, a smile faintly appeared on Li Minchun’s lips.
It seemed if she wanted to stabilize her authority in Ling Kong, Ma Yunfei would be the first to be dealt with.
Thinking this, Li Minchun pressed the intercom, “Secretary, bring Ma Yunfei in.”
Before long, Ma Yunfei appeared in the office. He glanced up at Su Xin sitting behind the desk, feeling a pang of dissatisfaction.
He recalled how just a while back, when this woman first arrived at Ling Kong, it was he who had promoted her. Back then, she was so respectful and honest towards him, and now she had completely changed.
It was truly frustrating.
But Ma Yunfei seemed to have forgotten the saying about the wheel of fortune turning, and how things can change over time.
“Leader, you called for me,” despite harboring countless grievances against Li Minchun in his heart, he maintained a respectful demeanor on the surface, making sure not to give others any reason to criticize him.
Li Minchun smiled and gestured to the chair in front of her. “Please have a seat, Mr. Ma.”
Once Ma Yunfei was settled, Li Minchun continued, “I owe my current success entirely to you, Mr. Ma. If it weren’t for your recognition back then, there wouldn’t be today’s Su Xin.”
As she spoke, she even prepared a cup of coffee for Ma Yunfei. The unexpected courteousness put Ma Yunfei on guard, unsure of her intentions.
With an unremarkable smile, Li Minchun went on, “Now that I’ve reached this position, it’s thanks to the chief’s mentorship and the support of my colleagues, including your strong recommendation, Mr. Ma. I must thank you all.”
From the beginning, Li Minchun had already elevated her status, making it clear to Ma Yunfei the kind of person she was.
“I remember you have a young and beautiful wife and an intelligent son, don’t you?”
Suddenly, Li Minchun switched the topic to Ma Yunfei’s family.
This unexpected question caught Ma Yunfei off guard.
His family details were rarely shared with outsiders, and Li Minchun asking about them implied she had done her research.
Continuing to conceal or lie about such matters would be very disadvantageous.
With this in mind, Ma Yunfei replied, “Yes, I have a wife and child, and we live very happily.”
What amused Li Minchun was the unnecessary addition at the end of his statement. In such a setting, it was an odd thing to say.
His statements revealed one thing: Ma Yunfei was very concerned about others’ opinions of him.
This was his weakness, and it was a loophole Li Minchun planned to exploit.
Li Minchun smiled and said, “I’m just asking casually. Here are some small gifts, and I’d appreciate it if you could bring them back to your sister-in-law and nephew, Mr. Ma.”
With that, two exquisitely wrapped boxes were placed in front of Ma Yunfei.
“This, this is really too much. I can’t accept these,” Ma Yunfei was even more taken aback. It was usually the subordinates who gave gifts to their superiors, hardly ever the other way around, especially with such thoughtful consideration.
Since she brought them out, Li Minchun had no intention of taking them back. Smiling, she asked, “Aren’t you curious to see what’s inside, Mr. Ma? I suggest you accept them.”
Though puzzled, Ma Yunfei slowly opened the two boxes. The moment they were opened, his face turned pale.
Inside one of the boxes was a limited edition Iron Man figure, and the other contained a beautiful, intricately designed gemstone necklace.
Ma Yunfei was all too familiar with this necklace. It was the token of love between his wife and that damned person. In his anger back then, he had secretly thrown the necklace away and lied to his wife about it being lost. Who would have thought that the long-lost necklace would reappear in front of him?
He didn’t need to see it; even with closed eyes, he could vividly imagine what it looked like.
The problem was how this woman had found out about all this. Such a secret was something he would never discuss with anyone. For a moment, Ma Yunfei’s mind was a swirling mess, and even his hand holding the necklace began to tremble.
Seeing his expression, Li Minchun was confident that she had achieved the desired effect.
She then patted the dazed Ma Yunfei on the shoulder and said, “No need to be so surprised. Finding out and acquiring these things was quite easy for me. Otherwise, do you think becoming the Qingmu Leader is something just anyone can achieve?”
Observing Ma Yunfei’s ever-changing expression, Li Minchun didn’t want to push him too hard, so she said, “Alright, you may go now.”
As Ma Yunfei left with the gifts, he looked back at Li Minchun with terror etched in his face. The complex emotions within him were countless.
It seemed he had indeed underestimated things; this was a woman he couldn’t afford to provoke.
She was right. To ascend to the position of Qingmu Leader so swiftly and easily required substantial capability-it was far from impossible.
Many spend their entire lives striving for power, and for most, it remains just a distant dream.
But Li Minchun’s rise served as a warning. Just because you’ve been at the company a long time doesn’t guarantee you’ll naturally advance to higher positions. Often, what truly matters is one’s capability.
