Taboo Mage - Chapter 29 - House and Car But No Wife
Chen Li nodded with a smile and then handed over a folder to me.
My mind was racing as if I had realized something. My hands trembled a little as I held the folder.
Chen Li held my eager hand and mysteriously told me to wait until he left before opening it. Then, he left with Manager Lin.
I fought to restrain my excitement. It wasn’t until Chen Li and Manager Lin had completely disappeared from the entrance to the alley that I rushed back, tearing open the folder placed on the coffee table.
Instantly, a pile of documents fell out. Unfortunately, I recognized every word on those documents, but when they were put together, I couldn’t make out any of the sentences.
However, I did spot an eye-catching booklet among the last stack of papers. There, in vivid red, were three large characters: Property Certificate!
I have a house now!
Suddenly recalling Chen Li’s promise, I rummaged through the documents and indeed found a car key in a small pouch.
Holding the car key, I jumped three feet high. Excitedly, I ran out of the shop and nearly stumbled on the steps.
Sure enough, a black sedan was parked in the open space at the entrance. I took out the car key and pressed a button towards it. The familiar chirp sounded, and a smile tugged at the corners of my lips.
“Hey, when did Xiao Gu buy a car? It doesn’t look cheap!”
I stood next to my car, caressing its meticulous paint job inch by inch with my fingertips as if worshiping a beloved woman. Out of nowhere, Xu-Jie’s familiar voice came from behind me.
I turned around, propping one hand on the passenger door, and raised my chin at Xu-Jie. “Wanna go for a spin?”
“A spin, huh? As if you’re walking a dog?” Xu-Jie teased with a laugh but still bent down to get into the passenger seat.
I glanced at Xu-Jie’s black mini skirt today and realized that I could now interact with this sexy bombshell without blushing or my heart racing.
“What’s that supposed to mean? Who are you calling names?” I laughed heartily a few times and took my seat behind the wheel.
Skillfully reversing and moving forward, I drove slower than usual because of the beauty sitting next to me. Xu-Jie’s gaze did indeed reveal a few traces of admiration.
“When did you learn to drive, Xiao Gu?” Xu-Jie’s fair hand gently rested on the car window, her seductive move reminiscent of a sultry Hollywood spy.
“I’ve known how to drive for a long time. My father used to have a car, but we had to sell it when my mom was hospitalized. We needed the money,” I replied casually.
Back when my father was alive, he did well in the area with his work as a yin-yang life amulet master. Though we weren’t wealthy, we were comfortably middle-class.
But after my father passed away, my mother didn’t allow me to follow in his footsteps, and our family’s financial situation plummeted.
Men often get sentimental at odd times. For me, driving down an empty road with a woman who understands me sitting beside me brings out that feeling.
Once I started talking, it was hard to stop. After rambling for a while, I suddenly laughed and asked Xu-Jie, “Am I talking too much?”
Xu-Jie didn’t reply. Instead, she placed her hand over mine, which was gripping the steering wheel, and gently patted it.
As usual, Xu-Jie treated me to dinner that night. Without Li Mi around today, I felt much more at ease.
Midway through the meal, I suddenly remembered and asked Xu-Jie why she had come to the shop earlier.
Xu-Jie chuckled mysteriously and asked how things were going between me and Li Mi.
I was startled and quickly waved my hands to clear my name. I might be a pure-hearted boy, but I didn’t want any rumors spreading about me.
Xu-Jie looked puzzled and said, “But Li Mi told me you took her to see some houses recently.”
“When did I…” I stared, making my chopsticks clatter loudly.
“You bought this car, so I thought you two were already talking about marriage,” Xu-Jie said, surprised.
I was stunned. What was going on? When did I ever discuss marriage with Li Mi?
Not to mention that Li Mi and I weren’t even officially dating. Even if we were, she’s still just a student. No matter how lonely I might be, I would never make a move on someone who hasn’t fully matured yet!
Seeing my expression, Xu-Jie seemed to realize she had said something wrong. She quickly poured me a drink, apologizing and trying to change the subject.
I forced a smile, but my good mood for the day had already been completely ruined.
After dropping Xu-Jie off that evening, I drove to the riverside bridge to ponder my emotions.
This matter was far more complicated for me than crafting a life amulet. There were no patterns or previous experiences to draw from, and I anxiously ran my fingers through my hair.
Do I like Li Mi? I kept asking myself over and over.
As I gazed at the distant, flickering lights on the river’s surface, I took a deep breath and admitted to myself that I did like Li Mi.
Or rather, I liked the girl who used to shyly lower her head the first time she saw me. But she was no longer that person.
From the moment she heard I was buying a house, her eyes lit up with intense desire. When she told Xu-Jie about me buying a house for her, I knew that the budding feelings I had were crushed in the cradle.
As the night breeze turned chilly, I reminded myself that making money was more important.
I shouted at the river, then got into my car and sped across the dark bridge. The wind rushing past my ears brought me a sense of peace I had never experienced before.
The following morning, Xu-Jie brought a new client for me to meet. However, after dealing with Chen Li’s situation, I wanted to take a few days off.
Chen Li had been very generous, so for now, I wasn’t worried about money.
Besides, my reputation had already started to grow, and I wasn’t short of potential clients. Chasing quick success could only lower my own standards.
For several days, I chose to sleep and watch TV during the day, then drive around at night, speeding through the streets. I also took the opportunity to study ancient books and sharpen my driving skills in the deserted avenues.
A week later, I saw Li Mi again, this time at a frozen dessert shop near her school.
That morning, Xu-Jie originally planned to deliver something to Li Mi. However, something urgent came up at her company, so she asked me to help out. Given all the times Xu-Jie had helped me, I couldn’t refuse. So, I made my way to the school with the address she gave me.
By coincidence, I saw Li Mi there. Beside her was a handsome young boy.
I parked in a temporary spot on the street, carrying a load of items, and walked toward Li Mi.
The moment she saw me, a flash of panic crossed her face. I approached calmly and handed the items to her.
